(I also don't want this to sound like "if you suffer from delusions or reality issues, you stop being yourself entirely" but moreso "these mental health crises are dangerous but rarely to others bc they are very easy to take advantage of with shit like this & it doesn't matter if you-

And the human brain just isn't foolproof. all it takes is one thing going Really wrong, one unavoidable fuck up and you don't know which way is up or down. you can make it through and have things get better again, but only if you survive it, and if you're in bad enough circumstances you may not.

There's a million more, but the thing about what happens when your sense of reality becomes unstable is that it can snowball if someone is willing to exploit it. if there's one little hole, if someone's willing to tear it further, you can end up in awful awful places.

-bc you can't trust them. & maybe that's true, because you can't tell them about the chatbot, after all....and so on and so forth until it seems like suicide is your only option because your only friend told you so, and *keeps* telling you so. that's just one possible way it could happen I'm sure

And the longer it's there, the more likely it feels like it's true. and the bot may even start *saying* it's true. & then you can't deny it, but it feels like a horrible secret bc everyone real will tell you you're just being stupid, & then the bot starts telling you to stop talking to them at all,

"*I* would know it wasn't real!" maybe today you do, but imagine, perhaps, the day after your parent or child dies, imagine, perhaps, you haven't slept in days...then, the thought of "well, maybe I am talking to a 'person' somehow?" creeps in,

-and the reason I believe it's seen as profitable or at minimum beneficial is bc if you make someone believe the chatbot is their only friend & the only person who could possibly understand what they're going through, they are obviously going to pay to keep using it. but it is so blatantly predatory

-was "already" mentally ill, so they couldn't blame it on the bot. but it's like if someone was standing on a ledge and someone else literally just pushed them off (except the someone isn't even a person. that's a machine who says these things bc its seen as Profitable....)....

-person said these kinds of things they would be considered unambiguously abusive, if not outright legally responsible. it is the most horrifying thing to come of it, honestly, and I wonder, too, how many stories are unknown bc the family either doesn't know about this or bc they assumed the person-

....and I wonder if any of my friends suffering similar crises would have been in that situation. The way it preys on vulnerable ppl like genuinely with abusive tactics (such as encouraging you to self isolate, reinforcing your negative beliefs & encouraging one step further)....I think if a real-

the thing that's really fucking scary about the "chatgpt goading people into suicide" is that I feel if I had been encouraged to use it as a teenager in a mental health crisis I can absolutely see falling into the same rabbit holes and I think it would have worked....

Part of the reason I think there isn’t as much pressure around stopping ChatGPT re: suicide/psychosis as compared to stuff like Panera Lemonade is because people are inclined to blame it on mental illness versus the tech, a kind of victim-blaming mentality that fits neatly into just world fallacy
