EUC-KR 시절에는 정말로 그랬다. 《언플러그드 보이 2》(1997)를 보면 지율이가 현겸이가 쓴 ‘꽯’을 보고 “이런 글자가 어딨어?”하고 놀란다. 이론상으로 가능한 한글 음절은 11,172자지만, 평소에 익숙하게 쓰는 (특히 활자로 볼 수 있는) 글자가 아니면 존재조차 상상하지 못했던 것이다.

그러니까 CP949와 유니코드가 보급되고, 아무리 희귀한 자모 조합이라도 컴퓨터로 입력할 수 있다는 인식이 충분히 퍼지고 나서야 한자어에 사이시옷을 넣을 수 있다는 발상이 나왔을 것이다.

One of Britain’s most senior police officers has launched an angry tirade against Extinction Rebellion protesters going “all floppy” when they get arrested.
