Look, I know this weaponization of male academic interest is the oldest story in the book, but itβs just so, so pernicious. Itβs awful to the women directly involved, but itβs also awful to *all* women in the academy, who have to live in its shadow all the time.

Summers called this female Chinese economist βperil.β
βYellow perilβ was partially built on the claim that Chinese women were sexually immoral threats.
That logic fueled the Page Act of 1875, which barred Chinese women by presuming they were prostitutes, even before the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.

This session will feature Professor Philine Widmer (PSE), who will present her latest paper, βThe Political Effects of X's Recommender Algorithmβ (co-authored with Germain Gauthier, Roland Hodler, and Ekaterina Zhuravskaya). Drawing on a large-scale field experiment, Philine's work examines the effects of Elon Muskβs social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on user engagement and political beliefs. Their findings reveal that switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed not only increases engagement but also nudges users toward more conservative positions.
