Screenshot of an X.com post by The Associated Press (@AP) stating that dozens of immigrant families protested for better treatment behind fences at a Texas detention facility, where a 5-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father were sent after being detained in Minnesota. Below is a video thumbnail showing a crowd gathered outdoors along a fenced walkway; many people wear bright blue or red outerwear, and some hold signs.
After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.

Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.
The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that theyβre the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesiveβbecause of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about βWestern civilization,β while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.
Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significantβthough not finalβvictory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Survey: Parents and teens support school cellphone bans, and most donβt perceive major downsides | Brookings
Surveys show widespread cellphone bans have strong teen and parent support, reducing use in school but not eliminating it.
Really important new work from my UAS research team using our probability-based national panel to look at parent AND teen support for cellphone policies in schools. High level: nearly everyone supports major restrictions. www.brookings.edu/articles/sur...

New research by @imbernomics.bsky.social and colleagues using Texas data dives into different economic returns to college majors by race and gender. There are differences in the share of students going into high-paying fields, as well as earnings within those fields.

Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti
Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti
βWe are heartbroken but also very angry.
Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact.
I do not throw around the βheroβ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trumpβs murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed.
Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.
Kare 11 local news just read, in full, this statement from Michael and Susan Pretti, the parents of Alex Pretti.

I wanted to support Prion Alliance because of a personal connection so we added that to the list www.prionalliance.org. The toddler was happy with "candles! candles!" but we'll try to include him next year.

Our family decides on where to donate in lieu of gifts for one night of Hanukkah. This year, my husband wanted to support immigrants, so we donated to JFS; my daughter wanted to support kids in foster care, so a local org that provides supplies to foster families and graduating foster kids.

Trump's admissions data collection strains college administrators
Universities must report student demographics, grades and test scores by March 18
1/ A more serious MLK Jr. Day post: The article shows the bureaucratic absurdities associated with the administrationβs request to collect admission data desegregated by test score race, and gender; it also reveals that the intent is to segregate higher education. hechingerreport.org/proof-points...
