Poem by Pat Ingoldsby
A Message For When I Am Gone

Ireland

It is little or no favours
you ever did for me or my poems
When I was alive

I have this terrible feeling
That someone
After I am gone
You will swing into
Your usual
Rearguard action

So
Posthumously
In advance
Shove it up your arse

Very sad to see the poet and general sharp observer of life Pat Ingoldsby has died. So, as he prepared for this event, here's to Pat. πŸ₯ƒ

The poem I visualise my death by Pat Ingoldsby
I will go down to the waters edge in Malahide,
Because it is time.
Da will be there in the boat.
He will smile.
'You're coming over' he will say.
He knows.
'Yes I am. It's lovely to see you.'
'Come on' he will say, 'Ta is waiting'.
A smile of joy will warm me.
He will not need to help me over the side.
Everything will be easy.
Da will pull on the oats
And away we will go
Crossing over
To the island
Forever
Getting there.

Rest in peace Pat Ingoldsby, a true Dublin character. May your crossing be easy.

This morning’s sunshine has reminded me of the word β€˜philocaly’: a love of beauty, even in the smallest things.

Word of the day is β€˜catch-fart’ (17th century: an obsequious individual who will always follow the political wind.

It’s that time of year, so resharing my piece on the mathematical patterns behind the Twelve Days of Christmas song.

As one reader pointed out, the solution also has the elegant property that it’s a present for every day of the year except Christmas… kucharski.substack.com/p/twelve-day...

it’s a little funny to watch people fret over whether social media will broaden their horizons or not because the things we’ve always had to broaden our horizons still exist. they’re called: books

One to one is the appropriate ratio for Discworld to other books on the reading list. Little palate cleanser between every other non-Pratchett book.

A cover of Herr Dumpidump by Roger Hargreaves that says "Herr Dumpidump by Roger Hargreaves" and with an illustration of Herr Dumpidump looking especially dumpidumpish (forgive me but I can't stop repeating the word dumpidump... DUMPIDUMP!)

Good morning.

Word of the Day is as beautiful as it is underused. β€˜Confelicity’ is finding joy in the happiness and success of others.
