Amazing, thank you! That makes sense about EPP. I will actually have enough solar power to run an electric sewing machine, just not enough for an iron since they pull sooo much energy. Luckily a family friend has a set of sad irons I can use. 🤞 I learn quick and don’t burn a hole in anything 😜

Have you tried online mail services like stamps dot com or pirate ship? I’ve used both, but pirate ship is free and less glitchy in my experience. They make it easy to compare shipping prices, give discounted shipping fees, and you can pay them and print your label and not have to wait in line at PO

Thank you! I looked into cordless irons but it seemed like they were meant to continually sit on a plugged in base every time you put the iron down? But I should look into it more to see if I missed something 🎉

Patchwork of your grandmothers quilt. This is a really beautiful project! Good luck with everything!

The harder it is to get it through the fabric. Look into thimbles and see if there are any styles that work for you. I also use pliers to pull my needle through which saves my wonky joints. Look at different patterns of stitches that people use to quilt to get ideas of what might fit best with the

Incredibly special to see her stitches! I agree that just looking up hand quilting videos on YouTube will get you far. Experiment with different needle types. You want something strong enough that it’s not bending on you when you’re trying to push the needle through, but the thicker the needle is,

So beautiful!! I support your desire to hand quilt it, both as a hand quilter myself and also to keep the continuity of her beautiful hand stitched piecing 😍. I have a quilt top that my great grandma hand pieced that I will be slowly mending/reinforcing and then re-quilting one day and it’s so

And if you are still tired, maybe your bod is having issues with absorption. I’m taking mine with vitamin C (which helps with absorption) and still coming up low in my blood work 😳. Gonna try a couple more things but might have to go to IV iron next 😱. Good luck out there everybody! 🥳

A photo of a square quilt hanging on the outside wooden wall of a tool shed. It is made from strips of fabric dyed with many different plants (and one insect) in shades of green, gray, brown, blue, yellow, tan, and pink. The strips are sewn diagonally on different squares and then sewn together to make diamond shapes.
A photo of a close up of the quilt described in the last photo. This on focuses in on a place where the squares meet and you can see the hand quilted stitches, sewn with blue indigo dyed thread. A corner of the quilt is flipped over and held up by my hand so you can see the backing of the quilt; flannel dyed light blue with indigo. In the very corner is a tag of the flame and honeycomb logo, a drawing of a flame filled with honeycomb and a bee walking across it. Hand embroidered around the label with unbleached cotton thread is the word “polychrome”.
Meet Polychrome! A 62”x62” cozy beauty made from many strips of botanically dyed fabrics. Named Polychrome both for the literal meaning of “many colors” and for the Rainbow’s daughter in the original Oz books. The backing is flannel and was dipped haphazardly in an indigo vat and looks like the sky.

Thank you for this! With patchwork, it’s best to press after each seam 😓, but this technique would work good for quilt backings and such!

And I actually should be able to run my electric sewing machine, but I grew up using an old treadle singer that my mom still uses! Or, a treadle that she converted to be a hand crank because when we got it I was too small to be able to control the heavy treadle 😜

I’ve heard that 12 volt irons exist, but I’m wondering how effective they are. I’m going to get one of those ironing board covers that concentrates the heat from below, and just saw something about using wooden weights to really get a good press after ironing.
