The country is about to celebrate 250 years of independent sovereignty, 50 years is a fifth (AKA 20%) of the nation’s independent history!

In the US, the average life expectancy is ~78 years, meaning that basically anyone who is trying to downplay the historical significance of the month has had it officially recognized by the US for the vast majority, if not entirety, of their lives.

I only point out the distinction because I have already seen people try to use that as an um, actually to rain on people’s parades and they don’t seem to acknowledge that second number. 50 years is still a huge number in context of this country.

It’s been 100 years since the first roots of Black History Month were planted and 50 years since the US officially recognized February as BHM, just in case you need the numbers when people start to claim it’s some newfangled invention of the woke left
