This comparsion in the NYTimes today is pretty stark. China is racing ahead to be a high-tech exporter of 21st century technologies, while the US is doubling down on being a petro-state exporting the technologies of the 19th century: www.nytimes.com/inte...

Bees play a critical role in U.S. food production. In addition to making honey, they pollinate 75% of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the U.S.
That's $15 billion worth of crops. Shook said the current losses are unsustainable.
"If this is a multi-year thing, it'll change the way we consume food in the United States," Shook said. "If we lose 80% of our bees every year, the industry cannot survive, which means we cannot pollinate at the scale that we need to produce food in the United States."
Hundreds of millions of bees, almost 80% of bees in the US, have died over he past eight months. Researchers don't know why.

Opinion | Elon Musk Needs to Teach Our Government How to Lose More Money
A better industrial policy for the United States involves more risk taking, not less.
Nice piece by Josh Zoffer on why the US government has a risk problem: it's too afraid to lose money on investments, even when taking bigger risks could yield massive strategic advantages. 1/
