It's a combination of my experience sharing a house with a truly epic example of calico royalty (RIP Boo, Slayer of Mousies, First of Her Name) and watching a Matt Bernstein podcast where he was adoring his magnificent calico during an ad read or something.

I keep saying this: you people have no idea how hard horse video gamers go! They just keep to themselves and don't make their hobbies other people's problems.

And it'll be nearly useless because once again we'll learn how crap humans are at this kind of planning, and that the system design IS the programming and the implementation of code is almost a side effect of the process and you can't split them into separate processes.

In the future, I think AI has a chance at fulfilling the promise of UML and specification-driven design, that given data of a certain shape and requirements of certain outcomes, AI will get very good at wiring up the first 80% of the back end of projects.

It helps that what I use LLMs to write is usually pretty simple. It's just not my job to solve hard problems at the cores of apps, I just need to tweak bits here and there. It's my job to solve hard problems on the outside surface of apps, and ai is poorly suited to do that.

Win win.

To be clear, my entire career has been going from one code base to another about every 2 years, each time writing frontend code and having to learn at least one new language and system for the back end on the run, often multiple. The LLM is kind of easy mode if your biggest barrier is syntax.

For reasons I don't fully understand, I don't get intellisense in my project. LLMs have filled that gap more or less. Basically, ai has empowered me to be a mediocre programmer in a language I don't actually know faster than I would otherwise be.

LLMs don't have vision and don't have many good examples of accessible vanilla web dev available to learn from. At worst, LLMs are dangerous here.

OTOH, when I need to write backend code in a language I don't know well, LLMs are great at giving me syntax and detecting patterns in the codebase.

I'm a front-end dev, and I've made my career by doing stuff nobody else wants to and by being able to jump into projects built on tech I've never touched.

LLMs are terrible at my core competencies: css, html, vanilla js and browser accessibility, which shouldn't surprise anyone.

Looks like incompetence, and El Paso has reopened already.

Which I get is not reassuring in the least.
