Geologist, backpacker, board game lover, mushroom forager, tide pool lurker, salamander and slime mold superfan. I study granites and rhyolites to understand how magma is stored in Earth’s crust πŸŒŽπŸŒ‹ Currently a postdoc working on Mono Basin eruptions πŸ”ŽπŸͺ¨πŸ€˜πŸΌ

So how small are the zircons that we date in the lab? Here's a Fish Canyon Tuff zircon on a $5 bill for comparison!

Oh man. I didn’t see those results 😭 only 25% people voted for sanidine. Dang

A black and white image of a sanidine with wild textures. Internal zonation is abruptly truncated by a bright rim. Plagioclase inclusions are present in the bright rim (darker grey minerals)

Gasp. Take a look at these cathodoluminescence images of felspars (sanidine and plagioclase) and take that back! These erupted out during a crystal-rich supereruption. Feldspar textures are amazing. And don’t forget the kspar megacrysts in Yosemite!

Keep sciencing. We are living through a time when looking at a rock and wondering how old it is qualifies as an act of resistance.

πŸŽ‚ Happy birthday, #MarieTharp! πŸ—ΊοΈ A pioneering geologist and cartographer, Tharp created some of the world's first maps of the ocean floor, and helped prove the theory of plate tectonics. Her legacy reverberates across ocean sciences today. Learn more: lamont.columbia.edu/news/happy-b...

The curly girl Reddit community helped me immensely when I got started. I would recommend getting a razor cut (they cut your hair w a razor blade so each curl is defined) but not a devacut (devacuts were too expensive and didn’t work for my 2b curly hair). Deep condition w clarifying wash 1x/month!

A comic about Karl Poppers paradox of tolerance using nazis as an example. If we extend tolerance to the intolerant, the tolerant will eventually cease to exist.

Karl Poppers paradox of tolerance needs to be spread far and wide. Unfortunately, we may be too late. I really hope we aren’t.

This is unfortunate - I made my AGU 23 presentation on a Mac and during my talk it had the incorrect formatting (no gridlines, different plot backgrounds, etc) and it really threw me off. It was fine in the pre-presentation screening though, so it was a big surprise. Maybe this is for the best?

Conference poster titled β€œPaired zircon and allanite dating of late Pleistocene-Holocene Rhyolites in the Mono Basin, Eastern California, USA”. The poster displays a geologic map, a backscattered electron image of allanite, fayalite, and magnetite grains, a whole-rock geochemical plot, U/Th isochrons, and an age summary plot showing how our method greatly increased precision compared to previous methods.

I couldn’t come in person to present my #IAVCEI2025 poster, so here it is for you all to enjoy!

Nine reduced rhyolites erupted in quick succession in the Mono Basin (Eastern California, just north of the Long Valley Caldera) ~6,000 years ago!

This is disrespectful and a flat out lie that further stigmatizes autism. It’s not a virus or a disease - it’s a neurological condition with a wide spectrum. Many Americans with autism work, pay taxes, and are living happy and healthy lives.
