We did and I wouldn't go back without it. Couldn't imagine trying to rely on public transit/buses. It was like $200 for the five days too. End of September/early October is end of season so things are a bit cheaper/less crowds. Weather was mostly great, a couple overcast afternoons

So we want to go back and dedicate more than 5 days to Crete. You can island hop between things with ferry/flight really easily too. Happy to answer any questions. We've been trying to go since Covid so I've got lots of thoughts

Literally just got back. Did 2ish days in Athens (was enough for me) and then 5ish days on the island of Milos - super chill, beach heavy. Don't go to santorini or mykonos - overprice tourist traps. Milos was awesome. Other island recs - naxos + paros. We considered Crete too but its a lot bigger...
