Yes tv and internet have differences, that’s true of all media.
But when TV dominated culture no one was saying “great, a few centralized channels with high barriers to entry - this is much better for society than people reading different books!” The critical view of TV at the time was the opposite!

It’s worth remembering that in the 80s/early 90s, arguing that dumbed down, lowest common denominator, sound bite driven TV media was causing the downfall of America was THE dominant progressive cultural critique. Pretty much no one argued it was a healthy or even “least bad” state of affairs.
