the reason the abundance side is winning the policy argument is that anti-abundance takes like this are completely devoid of any logic. just pure process fetish over outcomes

After consideration, I will post occasionally, but heavily censor what I share compared to other sites.

I tried making the transition, but talking about AI here is just really fraught in ways that are tough to mitigate & make it hard to have good discussions (the point of social!). Maybe it changes

Quote from Lee’s book on China. And he’s proud of it! Trump is an idiot playing the game badly but there is plenty of disrespect in Chinese business. Xi Jinping had no qualms β€œgoing at” Jack Ma with disrespect!

Lee takes joy in his book in recounting all the amoral devious, underhanded skulduggery and backstabbing that goes on in China’s β€œgladiatorial” business culture.
I’m not worried that Trump’s behavior is antithetical to that- I’m worried that they’re better at it than him and they’ll eat him alive.

Seriously? If someone disagrees with you it’s β€œmansplaining”? My last boss was a Chinese woman and most every Chinese person I’ve known in tech has emphasized that Chinese tech culture is far more brutal and hard charging than Silicon Valley.

Which is also notably cutthroat and known for bare knuckle tactics. Read Kai-Fu Lee if you don’t believe me. I think you might be overgeneralizing from the Chinese people you’ve worked with

Trump is def making things worse for the US but this sort of complacent historical determinism about China is a dumb argument. The same was true at the start of the modern era when Europe went from a backwater to leapfrogging past China.

11.04.2025 23:33 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Honestly this β€œmessage” is lazy and complacent historical determinism. The same was true a few centuries back when Europe leapfrogged China at the start of the modern era. The US has serious problems but this is a dumb perspective to take on the future

Excited to share what I’ve been working on at Essential AI. RL has been successful in getting LLMs to β€œself-reflect”, a key reasoning capability. But could this arise even earlier in pretraining? We investigated this question and got some surprising results.

Yes! When people admit they made a really stupid mistake in their vote and say they got burned, the best thing to do is to say "I'm sorry to hear about what happened, and I hope you'll reconsider your support moving forward and join us in preventing this harm coming to more people."

Yes tv and internet have differences, that’s true of all media.
But when TV dominated culture no one was saying β€œgreat, a few centralized channels with high barriers to entry - this is much better for society than people reading different books!” The critical view of TV at the time was the opposite!

Maybe some truths became β€œclear in retrospect” as you say…or maybe we are just repeating the habit of overfitting a narrative to our current moment

It’s worth remembering that in the 80s/early 90s, arguing that dumbed down, lowest common denominator, sound bite driven TV media was causing the downfall of America was THE dominant progressive cultural critique. Pretty much no one argued it was a healthy or even β€œleast bad” state of affairs.
