Also there’s the matter of a fear of death as an end unto itself. Money is a replacement for divine favor, not a psychological hole. Whenever I’ve spoken to absurdly rich people, if I ask them about death, they have plenty of nuanced theories on that. The rich have time to deal with that fear.

It’s neither. No one is worth talking to.

And before someone asks: no, I don’t think it’s bad to explore oneself through writing. I do think the tendency towards total individualism is very western and limited. Art, I think, can simultaneously explore the self and the greater self. I dunno if that greater self is a collection of references.

This somewhat goes for Sylvia Plath as well. I’m all for the cynicism but I struggle with works that feel incurious. So much of the exploration is regurgitated from older works which contained that universality. Tolstoy explores the heart, Plath explores the self.

I unfortunately fall within the camp that doesn’t really like James Joyce even if I understand the mythological and poetic references (somewhat, I’m no scholar). I find a lot of his writing to be very self-gratifying and individualistic. I prefer the universality of Tolstoy.

Also I’ve heard the claim that the difference is that she is a woman. I don’t think that in any way justifies the existence of billionaires in general. It’s also worth noting as many are saying, she drags other successful women on the album.
