Archives hive mind! Any ideas for remote online transcribing projects which would appeal to a retired archivist who loves palaeography and is coming to an end of their present project? Could be anything C16th-C20th, but I lean towards the earlier material unless it’s a topic I’m interested in.

Interesting. We have researchers who've found black people in our records, but they aren't described as such at all in the records themselves (they've been described like that in other documents, like court papers or newspaper reports).

After school club is the key incubator of 90s culture at my child's primary school. Every time I pick him up there's 'Now that's what I call music 1993' on at full volume and a line of at least a dozen girls working on the synchronised dance moves.

If you can, do her homework/home reading with her. Learning by doing (and letting the child teach you a bit) really worked for us.

Plus, kids love explaining stuff to adults, it engages them too.

Her school will have some app games online which will walk you through it, if you can get access.

It's so divorced from the reality of managing volunteers. I'm reluctant to label any policy by a sitting government as performative, but I struggle to see how this works in practice.

(And I love volunteers! And it's probably the least objectionable bit of this whole mess!)

Yesterday we sent out this briefing to all UK MPs and our press list. It is our response to calls for digitisation of adoption and care records. We believe there is a better - & much needed - solution to make these records more accessible to those that need them. #LongLostFamilies bit.ly/4mBqsxo

Hello! Just a note that the City only really gained control of Bethlem/Bethlehem/Bedlam in 1547, and between the end of the Order of St Mary and then it was pretty much a sinecure of the Royal Family. It's confusing, and not helped by the first history which colossally overplays the role of the City

Events Stay up to date with the upcoming events organised or hosted by the Institute of Historical Research

History curious? You don't need to be in London (or the UK) to attend many Institute of Historical Research seminars, although if you're in Bloomsbury you'll enjoy doing so. Most are hybrid (online/in person). They're free, usually fortnightly and open to the public.

Starting this week:

Close! It was the Chaplain. Same concepts, I think.

To give you some idea of the Horlicks he made of it, we have a ward called Gresham on site solely because he fantasised that Thomas G had a major role in the history. AI isn't the only thing capable of hallucinating...

At least one archivist on here has found 'false' reference numbers cropping up in enquiries (was it you @jameselder.bsky.social ?).

I'm never quite sure if the 'wrong' stuff that comes my way is from AI hallucinations, or the awful first history of the Hospital.

In my (very old and probably out of date) experience, lack of precision is something you can just about get away with as an undergraduate. It's very exposing at any higher level though.
