I think the communist party really tried (and succeeded to some extend) to erase him from history because he left for the West. And since he died before the revolution, the newer generations know almost nothing about him.

Maybe it's a combo of the Olympics + Worlds in Prague? And perhaps it was inspired by the success of the sports biopic Zátopek (2021). But Nepela is not that well known name even here so it's definitely a bit weird. The second one was in development for years though.
