28.01.2025 05:35 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The new F32 formatting for the personal section is really nice. Moving on from graduate school has me in my feels but its really nice to be able to outline personal non-research goals for my postdoc with things Iβve always wanted to do like teach a class.

08.01.2025 10:16 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Hi #microsky! Would anyone be willing to share their funded NIH F32 application with me, preferably in the realm of microbiology but anything would be helpful!
07.01.2025 18:07 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thanks Filipe! I used 1-10 uL/min which correlates to what you would approximately find in your vasculature and urinary tract. My first paper has those citations, happy to send it to you!
24.12.2024 13:57 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I could not have done this work without the help of my mentor Joseph Sanfilippo, our collaborators Zil and Matthias, and the valuable feedback from the members of the lab (@anu-sharma.bsky.social, @ashuppara.bsky.social, @piyushsharma.bsky.social, and Jessica Palalay). 24.12.2024 13:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Finally, we find that in flow cells can grow on glucose concentrations 1,000 time lower than in batch culture. These concentrations align with the affinity of bacterial glucose transporters, suggesting that bacteria have evolved to scavenge low concentrations of nutrients to support growth. (4/5)
24.12.2024 13:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In contrast, our microfluidic experiments revealed that cells can grow on extremely low levels of carbon and nitrogen when delivered by flow. (3/5)
24.12.2024 13:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In batch, we found that cells require 0.01% glucose and 0.1 mM ammonium chloride for growth. (2/5)
24.12.2024 13:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How do bacteria experience nutrient stress in nature? In our new preprint, we study how cells respond to nutrient limitation under flow. We find that in flow, cells can grow on concentrations of glucose 1,000 times lower than in batch cell culture. (1/5)

No but now I definitely have to! It very much feels like that was the approach. Especially when the acknowledgments noted a few subject matter experts and none of them were biologists.
01.12.2024 12:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I enjoyed Project Hail Mary quite a bit after suspending disbelief - though I think it would have been nice if a microbiologist had been consulted on the book. Little details could have been fleshed out to make the experiments more realistic.
