Hear, hear! High time the genre grew beyond leaves of non-diegetic notes arranged like so much lore salad.* Recreating FROM’s formula blindly, w/o consideration is meaningless.

*Doesn’t describe every Souls[like] per se, but it is an accurate assessment of the field as a whole (unfortunately).

Friend made this. Tried early build, kept me up all night.
If you like Lynch and expressionist cinema, play this.

Santaragione are also good eggs and for this to have happened is pretty shit.

The original game director for Milano's Odd Job Collection graciously worked together with us to make this re-release happen. He even gave us never-before-seen concept art and development materials that we translated and included in-game!

After spending years focused on adventure game development with 2017’s Thimbleweed Park and then 2022’s Return to Monkey Island, Gilbert said that he was β€œthinking about something new” for his next game project. But the first β€œnew” idea he pursued wasn’t Death by Scrolling, but what he told Ars was β€œthis vision for this kind of large, open world-type RPG” in the vein of The Legend of Zelda.

After hiring an artist and designer and spending roughly a year tinkering with that idea, though, Gilbert said he eventually realized his three-person team was never going to be able to realize his grand vision. β€œI just [didn’t] have the money or the time to build a big open-world game like that,” he said. β€œYou know, it’s either a passion project you spent 10 years on, or you just need a bunch of money to be able to hire people and resources.”

And Gilbert said that securing that β€œbunch of money” to build out a top-down action-RPG in a reasonable time frame proved harder than he expected. After pitching the project around the industry, he found that β€œthe deals that publishers were offering were just horrible,” a problem he blames in large part on the genre he was focusing on.

β€œDoing a pixelated old-school Zelda thing isn’t the big, hot item, so publishers look at us, and they didn’t look at it as β€˜we’re gonna make $100 million and it’s worth investing in,’” he said. β€œThe amount of money they’re willing to put up and the deals they were offering just made absolutely no sense to me to go do this.”

Had a lot of fun interviewing game design legend @grumpygamer.com about his career, but I'm sad we're not getting this abandoned, Zelda-like "open world RPG" project, apparently because the world of modern game funding is incredibly brutal.

Course, all of these technically still apply to the title as-is, so it's not exactly a tragedy ;). Just feels as much like a non-native English speaker case as much as it is intended to emphasize the mirrored Ǝvil A Ǝvil connotation.

Not only that, but the thematic implications. If it followed after Give A Strive, would be a near match for both Live a Lie & Live Alive. Feels like we ended up with the Charlie Browniest "I got a rock" result instead.

Every time I see it, I am sad it *doesn't* rhyme with Give a Strive, real missed opportunity.

But yes, I know it's two Strives.

I did a new set of subtitles for Arrow's just announced release of Peking Opera Blues coming next year. This one required taking certain creative risks to properly match the film's tone and energy (so I guess we'll see if that pays off).

Eleanor Parker and Dennis Morgan lean in for a kiss against a forest background in THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU.

My annual reminder that THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU (1944) is possibly the loveliest Thanksgiving movie ever made. It has everything: romance via Eleanor Parker and Dennis Morgan; blacklist interest via co-screenwriter Alvah Bessie; great DP in Bert Glennon; and an underrated auteur, Delmer Daves.

I sympathize with folks who maybe can't play specific games, but there's no legitimate argument otherwise. You haven't played the game, unless you've actually played the game.

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.
