I spent the first hour trying to convince myself I might like it. Gave up when a piece of apparently serious dialogue made me laugh out loud.

That series was first shown when I was 8 years old and I still can't think of any TV character that generated in me as much hatred as he did.
Only Ronnie Corbett's mum in Sorry comes close.
Guy over the road has had one of his cars parked outside my house for months. Doesn't bother me but I might get John McGinn round to shift it.

You eat the scone. Crumbles. You crumble. You ruddy crumb. Dotty Proverbs is at the door. And you, you crumb, are already eating the scone. She rings the bell. Bell. Rings.
I think this distancing effect extends into the language of North American match reports vs say UK reporting on cricket or soccer.
I understand and enjoy watching baseball. But ask me what happened based on a report written for a North American audience and I'm stumped - even if I watched the game.
Most top flight football matches in England are ultimately tedious because they are decided on "which team can get away with the most fouls every time a set piece is delivered into the box."
