This New Yorker documentary about the 1988 UK government ban on broadcasting the voices of Sinn Féin and I.R.A. leaders is pretty good but they show *that clip from The Day Today with no explanation and no indicator that it is satire.

That series was first shown when I was 8 years old and I still can't think of any TV character that generated in me as much hatred as he did.

I think this distancing effect extends into the language of North American match reports vs say UK reporting on cricket or soccer.

I understand and enjoy watching baseball. But ask me what happened based on a report written for a North American audience and I'm stumped - even if I watched the game.
