This is essential to ensuring our weather forecast offices become fully staffed, especially to prevent burnout and overworking of our NWS employees. They took an oath to protect life and property, and this memo will help make sure they can continue to do that without restriction.

Great news! New fact sheet posted by @WhiteHouse highlights @NWS employees as an example of a public safety exemption, where filling vacancies/creating new ones will not need approval from agency leadership. I’m assuming we will be receiving more guidance on this soon.

Watching this nomination hearing has really made me realize the impact social media has had on spreading misinformation about weather to those leading out country. While their thoughts and questions are sincere, they truly don’t understand what the NWS does vs what EMs do.

Seriously though, our heads are spinning and we would love words of encouragement and advice from parents in similar predicaments (no family nearby for childcare, NEED double income, etc.)

I guess it comes down to making friends with other young parents and connections to find trustworthy childcare, or finding a way for my husband to somehow double his salary so I could stay home for a while… but SAHM doesn’t feel like the best option given it could be difficult to find another job.

Even so, 12 week unpaid work is excruciating when you have a newborn to pay for, likely medical bills from delivery, and regular bills. How the heck do people do this? Our heads are spinning trying to plan a course of action lol

Husband and I are doing long-term planning in case we have a kid soon. How do career couples, without nearby family, actually make it work? 6 weeks maternity (2 weeks paternity) and 12 week unpaid FMLA… then what after? Do you bargain work for alternative hours? Find childcare for a 4ish month old?

Big news: Neil Jacobs (NOAA Administrator/Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere nominee) officially has his nomination hearing on July 9th. Based on past nominations, hearing>cloture>confirmation is about a 1-1.5 month process.

Perhaps the most documented storm of 2025? Arnett OK was stellar, and so were the chaser vibes. Let’s see what tomorrow brings! #okwx

I know I’m definitely not alone in this, seeing my federal/contract/CI friends also suffering is heartbreaking. We’re all in this together.

Not knowing if I’ll have a job in <2 months is really weighing on me. I have faith something will happen and it will all be okay, but the worry remains. My husband and I were really hoping to settle here.

“…and hurricane forecasts in real time. There are other critical contracts for Texas that are in commerces contracting backlogs such as routine maintenance repairs to NOAA's aging hurricane Hunter fleet.

“More recently, a data center at Texas A&M was shut down for several days because of bottlenecks. In the department's contracting process, depriving Texas emergency and water managers of critical drought forecasts that help them manage reservoirs and track storm surge data…

“Recently NOAA came close to letting the contract expire for AWIPS, a system as critical for weather forecasters to access weather data from satellites, radars, surface stations, and computer models and to issue weather warnings.

Cruz: “There is reportedly a backlog of contracts waiting approval of the DOC with only 5 or 6 being approved per day. NOAA alone has 5,700 set to expire this year. These contracts include everything from post hurricane flood assessments to janitorial services.
