"15 years ago, Polish workers came here to find opportunity. Now Poland is growing twice as fast as we are," says Kemi Badenoch.
Any ideas what may have happened in the interim?

"For Britain to withdraw from Europe would be to retire into "an old people's home for fading nations...I do not even think it would be a comfortable or agreeable old people's home. I do not much like the look of some of the prospective wardens".(Jenkins)

So many questions, but my main one is:

08.10.2025 09:13 β π 8 π 9 π¬ 0 π 2The UK govt is complicit in Israeli actions in Gaza & no amount of fiddling with protest laws can remove that stain.
You can be a true friend to the Jewish community & abhor what the Israeli govt does in their name.
Gaza is about rule by law & international order v. Might is Right & vengeance.
"Growth is the number one priority of this Labour government."
Oh no, not like *that*.
How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

08.10.2025 05:39 β π 175 π 90 π¬ 1 π 4Just to be clear, an English degree - learning to critically assess texts - is actually one of the most dangerous for people such as Badenoch.
An educated population, able to bring hundreds of years of context to statements in a dawning age of AI slop and attention-seeking dishonesty is also vital.
Wilful ignorance of how trade and migration actually work in a globalised economy.
The idea that the (short and long-term) movement of people -especially between India and the UK - has nothing to do with trade and investment is (obviously) wrong.

Excellent letter from the Bishop of Birmingham to Robert Jenrick.
At a time when so many other voices have been silent, the bishops have been admirably outspoken against attempts to stir up division.
The churches do a lot of community cohesion work & do not want to see this trashed for party gain.

Lords Heseltine & Kinnock seem more alive to these self-evident truths than most members of the Commons. Similarly, I find thinkers with direct lived experience of far right dictatorship, Greeks of a certain age for example, crystal clear about whatβs happening now.

So, the plan is to cut English, the arts, and sociology - the degrees that actually study culture - while on another part of your platform claiming to βdefendβ British culture.
Itβs performance nationalism with a reading age of seven.

Yes, we need to talk about the Tory conference in Manchester.
Barely a squeak from the usual suspects on the free-speech right, of course, but this amounts to the most serious assault on free speech in living memory. We cannot accept a situation where hundreds of non-violent demonstrators are being arrested every weekend.

One significant - & dangerous - thing to watch for is professional commentators objecting to words rather than examining the evidence. It's pearl-clutching & cowardly, obviously, but also a deliberate attempt to avoid confronting exactly what they themselves are facilitating and often cheering on.

If this is how Israel treats a high-profile detainee like Greta Thunberg, I want you to consider how they treat Palestinian detainees.
