02.07.2025 00:06 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

My favourite kind of Dredd stories are the wackier, funnier ones that are basically Dirty Harry having to put up with living in Idiocracy.

Shipwreck, text version 2.0 - text currently incomplete - not for comment 19/02/25 A Game of Shipwreck Stories For 3 or more players, aged 12+ From an original idea developed whilst walking along the canal by Malcolm Craig and Jonny Hodgson
15 years ago, @handiworkgames.bsky.social & I were walking along the Union Canal between Polmont & Linlithgow, discussing our liking for shipwreck stories. Out of that came a lightweight game called (imaginatively) Shipwreck. It never saw the light of day and has lain untouched. Until now.

08.02.2025 18:35 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Dry Hook has expanded onto some of the nearby islands. Their prosperity has meant they've brought stone in for forts on the corners of triangle island. There's a bridge to the two long islands that have been joined by infill. These are now the West Dock and the East Dock. There's a continuous barrier on the eastern end, made by dredging the deep channel and putting the spoil, along with imported gravel, onto the islands (now joined by the Tree Dam to the south bank of the River Wackle). These are known as (south to north), Willow Bank, New Dam, East Bank, Oyster Fence. The western part of triangle island is fields, mostly with cows in them,
Fast forward a few centuries and we get a trading hub that's put a few more dams in to control the flow, built defences to stop raiders, and it's now a large town.
12.02.2025 09:46 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This is the left hand side of the previous area. The village of Dry Hook is on the delta side of triangle island. The villagers have made a fence with baskets filled with oyster shells to let them harvest oysters. Further down they've made the 'Tree Dam' from felled trees and brushwood to slow the flow of the water through their chosen area. This helps the oysters and partially mitigates flooding. The people of Dry Hook are a combination of fishing folk and artisans that make jewellery for trade with the pearls.
I traced the original to place the early settlement, and then worked out how they might adapt the environment for food and to mitigate flooding. This is based on how iron age people did things.
12.02.2025 09:46 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A pencil sketch in a paper notebook of a river delta with lots of channels and islands. A note on the bottom left of the sketch says "triangle island (labelled top left) is naturally about 5m above sea level and is mostly flat. Most of the delta is salt marsh. The land either side is v. Flat and not only floods regularly, but the river changes course often after heavy storms/flooding.
Need to build a city for the next part of a story. So I started by drawing the river delta that it's located on. Here's the Wackle Mouth.
