Lovely session with my primary trainee teachers this morning, linking educational theorists to their practice and helping them to explore (and critique) curriculum structures in their schools. It is inspiring to see them growing into critically reflective and reflexive teachers.

In the secondary phase, how do you develop the understanding of the form tutor role in the trainee teacher? Are they carefully matched to be a co-tutor with an experienced form tutor? Should the co-tutor be in a different subject area? What are your thoughts?

Having good role models within the teaching team that the trainee is joining helps them to assimilate the tacit knowledge needed to become an excellent teacher at the end of their training.
Passing on professional wisdom is key to helping teachers become ready for employment.

With trainee teachers returning to placement next week, how are you going to be welcoming them back?
Have they experienced the start of term PD day before? Who is going to be taking them under their wing?
If you are mentoring a new trainee, how are you going to help them to settle in?

One of the best things about working with trainee teachers is seeing them in action in schools. We are working with Marjorie McClure school this year and this fella is here to greet visitors.

Well, Saturday brings some time to do some more work on my Doctorate. Today brings some analysis of preliminary work on factors that enable and impact on personal capacity to mentor the way lead mentors want to. Also exploring the support mechanisms around lead mentors.

PPA slots costs about Β£3000 per year, so an additional lesson of PPA represents an investment by schools. Can we quantify the net benefits to schools of mentoring trainee teachers or ECTs?

The recognition aspect is so important for mentors within the school community. Their expertise in workforce development and talent retention needs to be recognized and valued by SLT.
