Maybe. But something I've seen mentioned on Twitter but not yet here is that Alysa Liu's father, Arthur, was forced to flee China due to his involvement in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. And that he successfully fled by way of Operation Yellowbird, a Hong Kong operation.

some thoughts on Alysa’s gold medal skate a day later

- this is maybe my absolute favorite skating performance ever? I know enough to understand it’s not the most challenging technical skate but the sheer infectious joy is unmatched

- I’ve watched this maybe 15 times

- I mean holy shit look at it

Incredible opinion. It holds that the common ICE tactic of jumping out of an unidentified rental vehicle and seizing suspected noncitizens while masked violates the Fourth Amendment because the *manner* of the seizure is incompatible with a free society governed by the rule of law.

Image of a Virginia Democrats' proposed congressional map that is drawn to elect a ten-to-one Democratic majority and flip four Republican seats in 2026. The district lines are displayed over top of a basemap with major roads and cities labeled. The districts are colored by the 2024 presidential winner's margin of victory, with Kamala Harris districts in blue and Donald Trump districts in red. Darker shades represent larger margins of victory. An embedded chart shows the 2024 presidential election results and the adult population racial demographics in each district.

Kamala Harris won 10 of the 11 districts, while Black voters would retain their ability to elect their preferred candidates in Districts 3 and 4, which remain safely Democratic.

NEW: Virginia Dem legislators have passed their new 10-1 congressional map targeting 4 Republicans. Gov. Spanberger will likely sign it soon.

It would take effect for 2026 if voters pass it in an April 21 referendum (litigation pending).

GOOD NEWS! Researchers at Stanford University have developed a UNIVERSAL vaccine known as GLA-3M-052-LS+OVA, that protects against a wide range of respiratory viruses, bacteria AND even allergens. The vaccine is delivered intranasally AND provides broad protection in the lungs for several MONTHS.

In a note embedded on top of an FAQ question, “What is the average length of stay for the aliens?” Tim Kaiser, the deputy chief of staff for US Citizenship and Immigration Services, asked David Venturella, a former GEO Group executive whom The Washington Post described as an adviser overseeing an ICE division that manages detention center contracts, to “Please confirm” that the average stay for the new mega detention centers would be 60 days.

Venturella replied in a note that remained visible on the published document, “Ideally, I'd like to see a 30-day average for the Mega Center but 60 is fine.”

Okay my read: since the court struck down the tariffs as unlawful from the start, it's refund time. Jurisdiction will be US Court of International Trade, they'll have to unpack it. But there should be refunds coming. Looks like a complete repudiation of IEEPA-based tariffs and total loss for Trump.

(Bloomberg) -- The US Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, undercutting his signature economic policy and delivering his biggest legal defeat since he returned to the White House.

"free/cheap/non-toxic youth sports" feels like one of those skeleton keys that would have knock-on effects accidentally fix 100 unrelated things about America

or, you know, even if it didn't, at least a bunch of kids would be able to have fun playing sports

NBC ran a piece where Mary Carrillo went to Norway to find out why they're so good at the Winter Olympics and i was yelling BECAUSE IT'S COLD THERE

then she went to a little tiny ski jump for kids and was like "it's free, equipment is provided, & they don't emphasize results"

and i was like.
oh!

Whatever American youth sports is today, it's not fun. Not for the kids, not for the coaches, not for the parents. It's business, like everything else.

Yeah, US Olympians are woke. Deal with it. Sports have always been political — it's just a question of who's speaking out.

"Unlike the 'meritocracy' they are trying to build in which white men are restored to their proper dominance, the Olympics are pretty close to a true meritocracy. Conservatives can’t whine that Simone Biles or Chloe Kim must have gotten their spots by pushing aside a more 'qualified' white athlete."

It has been beyond endlessly frustrating for me, a former professional athlete, that not a single Dem could muster the courage to say “what the fuck is wrong with you, sports are inherently unfair to begin with, let kids play with their friends”

Bad take. If the US doesn't join WW1, Germany very likely "wins" (which is to say, obtains peace on very favorable terms) and US involvement was not guaranteed.

Too much tanking discourse focuses on the fact it's rational under current CBAs (it is). But it is a massive failure this has come to be. These are competitions. Any design that incentivizes losing in any way needs to be abolished. Will ultimately eat the sports
