This is nuts. Famous and prestigious program. So toxic that it’s now a conservative goal to gut the humanities and universities generally while shoving AI everywhere

Samuel Starks was the first Black person to be a US state librarian, appointed in 1901 in West Virginia because of his position in the state Republican party. He was very active in the Knights of Pythias, founded a newspaper, and died too young. #BlackHistoryMonth

In a deliberate strategy, to harm women and hits rural women first & hardest. The U.S. State Dept. ordered public libraries to cease processing passport applications, disrupting a long-standing service that communities rely on and that has run smoothly for years.

ZineLibrary

Much of my youth revolved around the website ZineLibrary. It went down around Occupy in a massive loss for a movement whose ideas and knowledge mostly doesn't circulate online but in person.

Anyway I've put it back online with a *thousand* anarchist zines:

State Dept. orders nonprofit libraries to stop processing passport applications Pennsylvania Reps. Madeleine Dean and John Joyce have proposed bipartisan legislation that would allow nonprofit public libraries to continue to serve as passport acceptance.

The SAVE act will disenfranchise millions, mostly women

It requires ID that matches your birth certificate or passport

If you’ve had a name change, your birth certificate won’t match

The State Dept is banning libraries from processing passport applications

They don’t want certain people to vote

I'm new to Cleveland and thus the poet Hart Crane. Yesterday, we taught with a 2017 art "book" printing of his epic The Bridge. This contemporary scroll opens with a print of a black sun, a nod to the original publisher Black Sun Press. The scroll form rolls out in front of you, just like a bridge.

I don’t really pay attention to charges of doomerism. I don’t know what it means offline.

I do know that refusing a version of how the future will unfold forecloses on the power that actually shapes that future. That’s not disavowing that tech changes are happening but they are in now a given.

POTW: Another Kind of Flip Book | Brooklyn Public Library Cover and page from Charles (Karl) Blieffert photograph album, 2015.010. 1900-1917. Today’s POTW comes from a collection I discovered when it was requested by a researcher.

"I was originally struck by the album because it is constructed in a way I have never seen, with multiple photographs attached to a page by tabs which hold them in offset stacks, like shingles on a roof."

What Mira Nair Taught Zohran Mamdani The mayor’s famous filmmaker mother reveals the origins of his ferocious ambition.

Cannot believe that I got to profile an extraordinary filmmaker, who happens to be the mother of NYC’s new mayor, and think about intersections of art and politics, and how familial love might produce a buffer against the corrosive politics and cynicism of our time. My story about Mira Nair:
