IL state legislature has introduced HB4279 the "Passenger Rail Planning Act"
The bill sets targets and guidelines for passenger rail in Illinois and helps planning coordination with other states. Each corridor would be nominated for the Corridor ID round 2 grants.

There's a couple of questions we still have unanswered, like if they require infrastructure upgrades (more track capacity, crossovers) to operate this service and if so, funding from where?
Otherwise really good news!! Hopefully Amtrak and the state can get it running by 2029!
Watertown, Pewaukee and Madison do support this, but have yet to reach a full blown agreement for stations. These station costs could be covered by grants.

Multiple scenarios are floated for frequency with the preferred choice being 2 round trips. Ridership would be around 258k annually.

Amtrak on Monday gave a presentation to the city of Pewaukee WI about extending the Hiawatha to Madison
Up to 2 round trips daily would extend, utilizing mostly existing infrastructure initially running at 60mph until upgrades are done in the future for 79mph & more frequency.
