Next speaker Michelle @chellers.bsky.social . Cities like Hoboken NJ have achieved vision zero using solid measures to slow down cars. Many cities "declare" vision zero lack a solid plan to get there. Need leaders to prioritize it & follow evidence based approach, like today's motion.

a potty mouth with good values and policy would get my vote :p (and there are so many ways to get involved that aren’t actually running for office) ☺️

- for whatever messed up reason, property owners get a vote even if they don’t live in that city (as long as they’re a canadian citizen). this stacks the odds against progressives, making it even more important to get involved

local elections matter, pass it on 🗣️

- community! I like that at the local level (at least in Vancouver) there is more of a diversity of parties than at higher levels of govt, because the people you’ll meet through it are the same type of weird as you. <3 it’s such a joy meeting so many cool, caring people

- those decisions have major climate impacts. in metro van, 32% of emissions are from cars and trucks, and 25% come from buildings (both of those sources of emissions are reduced by building dense, walkable neighborhoods btw, something city council has control over)

- only 11% of voters turned out in the last Vancouver by-election, so a handful of votes make a difference! it’s an opportunity for improvement

- local decisions have a huge effect on our lives. they determine what housing gets built where, what bike routes exist, whether your bus has priority

- the results of some elections are decided on the other side of the country. but in a local election, the decision is made right at home
