Metro Vancouver can't solve cost-of-living crisis without addressing the cost of getting around

While the multi-billion-dollar SkyTrain projects draw the most public attention โ€” and money โ€” thereโ€™s another, often overlooked mode of transportation that Metroโ€™s leaders view as a big part of the near-term solution: the humble bus.

It's no surprise that housing in Metro Vancouver is expensive. But it might surprise you that for some parts of our region, transportation costs even more than housing.

omg some Olympic Village residents are trying to NIMBY the elementary school. They're citing "neighbourhood character" for why four floors is just too much damned school for their neighbourhood

Should this major transit investment duplicate existing service or go to a totally awesome neighbourhood where we can visit restaurants and dentists and friends?

Have your say and fill out the survey today!!!! This will shape Burnaby for years to come.

Next speaker Michelle @chellers.bsky.social . Cities like Hoboken NJ have achieved vision zero using solid measures to slow down cars. Many cities "declare" vision zero lack a solid plan to get there. Need leaders to prioritize it & follow evidence based approach, like today's motion.

"City leaders today still have a choice: bow to privilege and maintain an unfair, damaging status quo, or show leadership by prioritizing fair, efficient, and affordable transportation over the single-occupant car and the exalted parking spot."

By extension, enhancing transit service can be a powerful Vision Zero strategy.

Better transit โ€”> More riders & fewer car trips โ€”> Fewer crash deaths

- for whatever messed up reason, property owners get a vote even if they donโ€™t live in that city (as long as theyโ€™re a canadian citizen). this stacks the odds against progressives, making it even more important to get involved

local elections matter, pass it on ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

- community! I like that at the local level (at least in Vancouver) there is more of a diversity of parties than at higher levels of govt, because the people youโ€™ll meet through it are the same type of weird as you. <3 itโ€™s such a joy meeting so many cool, caring people

12.03.2025 04:48 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 9    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

- those decisions have major climate impacts. in metro van, 32% of emissions are from cars and trucks, and 25% come from buildings (both of those sources of emissions are reduced by building dense, walkable neighborhoods btw, something city council has control over)

12.03.2025 04:48 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 9    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

- only 11% of voters turned out in the last Vancouver by-election, so a handful of votes make a difference! itโ€™s an opportunity for improvement

- local decisions have a huge effect on our lives. they determine what housing gets built where, what bike routes exist, whether your bus has priority

A non-exhaustive list of reasons to get involved in local politics

- the results of some elections are decided on the other side of the country. but in a local election, the decision is made right at home

If road deaths were a virus, weโ€™d call it a pandemic. Safer transport helps us all โ€“ and we need it urgently | Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Jean Todt Deaths on the road costs countries up to 5% of GDP. Centring transport around people, not cars, can propel development

The @cityofvancouver.bsky.social says it prioritizes pedestrians, but recent changes at Kingsway & Dumfries and Adanac & Commercial tell a different story. These projects make walking less safe and convenientโ€”at a cost. A thread. ๐Ÿงต 1/
