These key strategies could help Americans get rid of their carsย  ยป Yale Climate Connections Research points the way to a more climate-friendly, diverse, and desirable transportation system.

Going car-free is the best thing most people can do for climate. To reduce car dependency, cities should promote car-free living, supporting compact cities through policy, and investing in public transportation, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and shared mobility options.

Final stats for the Omni Centre cycle lane in 2025: a slight 1% increase on 2024 with 580,000 journeys; a new record set of 2,265 cyclists on Friday, 7th November.

The significant increase in numbers in prior years came after the development of cycling infrastructure on Leith Walk.

In the light grey back slabs of a stone seating area, we can make out the silhouette of a bicycle carved into the stone - marking out the space for train station cycle parking behind the benches, in which we can see numerous cycles parked on elevated stands, and sandstone tenements beyond.

I'm waiting for the first Cycle Cafe to hit The Shore.

Drop one in where Crollas used to be on the corner near Sandport Bridge.

Shore Cycles & Coffee. Serve up a few taps of local beer too, get coffee, make it a nice 3rd space for people as well.

Workshop & limited accessories. Blow some minds.

London is fast becoming a cycling city. As each new piece in the network appearsโ€”which has more than quadrupled from 90 to 431 km since 2016โ€”so do new cyclists. Its infrastructure now sees a stunning 1.5 million daily usersโ€”a 43% spike since 2019โ€”moving nearly half as many people as the Tube below.๐Ÿงต

INtro to Princes St article...

1. Princes Street (interim) success
Spokes has had a major success in our seemingly interminable campaign for bike lanes, and more pedestrian space, on Princes Street. If you emailed councillors when we suggested, thank you!
Eventual success is still very far from certain, but the Planning Committee, by 9 votes to 4, rejected a draft strategy for Princes Street and the Waverley Valley which would have ruled out bike lanes and wider footways completely. This is highly significant, as it is very unusual for councillors to ask officers to go away and have a complete rethink on a major draft strategy document. The Spokes written deputation to the Committee is here.

Spokes tram consultation response, extract...

Our submission covers many points, but three major issues (concerns and opportunities!) are..
โ€ข
Great concern over cycling safety in the Bridges corridor. We put forward a range of ameliorative or alternative measures, including single-line working, one-way tram (with Pleasance/Market Street the other way), tramlines on one side of the road with a cycleroute on the other, a bus gate/traffic filter; or choosing one of the other routes which are still seen by the Council as possible future options, such as Morrison Street and the Meadows (an option also favoured by Edinburgh World Heritage)
โ€ข
We urge dropping North Bridge tram stop and replacing it by two stops โ€“ at Waverley Steps to serve east Princes Street and the rail station, and at the North Bridge arcade, to serve the Old Town and again the rail station. There are multiple reasons for this suggestion, in addition to a major cycling safety aspect
โ€ข
There is a massive opportunity to incorporate an active travel bridge over the mainline railway, linking North Edinburgh Network to the new Roseburn to Fountainbridge path without long ramps down to road level and up again. This would be a truly transformative addition to the cityโ€™s offroad network.
Our drawing shows the tram (red) ramping up to the A8 crossing, with the active travel path in orange. The yellow dotted ramps are probably not needed, since most users would stay at high level, and those needing local access could ascend either at Roseburn or at the existing new Sauchiebank ramp.

Iโ€™ve complained to the BBC about #CelebrityTraitors. The repeated shots of Land Rover Defenders feel like product placement - banned under BBC rules - and itโ€™s clearly worked, with searches for the Defender spiking after the show aired.

8am on a frosty morning. The morning light not yet showing the sunrise. A small child wearing a pink puffy coat & matching helmet with a Hey Dougie backpack rides a small 16โ€ wheeled bike with streamers on the handlebars.

Sheโ€™s on a newly built bike lane about to cross a bridge. For context, her mother runs alongside on the pavement just out of frame.

There is a road marker showing a bike indicating this segregated cycle lane is for two wheels only. And this little girl is alone on the path riding towards the future.

This.

This right here is why proper cycling infrastructure is an investment in our communities and our future.

It is only the beginning. This route isnโ€™t even fully finished.

When we stop imagining and start doing, change happens.

Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. In frame one Calvin opens a door and says, "Hey Dad, I'm doing a traffic safety poster. Do you have any ideas for a slogan?" Frame 2: Dad, who's prepping to ride his mountain bike, says, "Sure! 'Cyclists have a right to the road too, you noisy, polluting, inconsiderate maniacs! I hope gas goes up to eight bucks a gallon!'"
Frame 3: Calvin, walking away, says, "Thanks, Dad. I'll go ask Mom." Dad responds from out-of-frame, "Why? That's a great slogan!"

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson, one of the greatest comic strips of all time, was born on this day, November 18, 1985 -- December 31, 1995.

And Calvin's dad remains a beacon of inspiration to cyclists everywhere.

Large SUVs are a danger to pedestrians, cyclists & other drivers.

In positive news, looks like Forth Ports have finally taken the time to block off the not-parking-but-treated-as-parking old pavilion and cobbled area of Rennieโ€™s Lock near Teuchters & the Scot Gov. Building!

Well done, will be a much nicer area from here on out without dodging car storage!
