This is why for-profit thinking in sports is going to lead into either a) sports (and multi-club ownership in football specifically) being a front for illicit actually profitable activities or b) collapse of its whole structure

You'd think so, but there's a small number of these. For every one Barcelona or Liverpool there's about 100 clubs that matter to much smaller amounts of people and will never generate meaningful profits, but which are actually crucial for the big ones to offer the profitable 'service'
