In 1991 when I first arrived in NYC I interviewed for an ed asst job; it paid a whopping $16,500/yr. HR woman asked me point blank, "Carrie, how are you going to live in NYC on this salary?" I said, "I have no idea, but I assume it's possible or you would pay more." Didn't get that job, lol.
