a post showing a bowl of candy with a single potato in the center with the text:

Tonight kids chose potato more than 25 times, each time triumphantly proclaiming to friends and family, "I GOT A POTATO!"
One kid shouted, "A potato, just like last year!" and another group said, "Oh, youre the potato house? You're legends!"

This has become an unexpected and joyful tradition. Kids are given the free choice and over and over again they choose Potato. My friends, every day you are given a choice. I encourage you: choose potato

i think if you ride public transit enough you learn that most weird behavior is not dangerous, and conversely i think driving a car teaches you that everyone is trying to kill you at all times

Something I love about archival films is that when someone had a couple feet of film left on a roll they'd often use it to film their cat. So many films finish with a few seconds of cats

So, here's some cats from the 1950s and 60s. They were loved

A copy of the source, which appears in the book Law, Sex and Christian Society in Medieval Europe by James A. Brundage, a historian of canon law.

I found the book How Markets Fail, about the 2008 recession, instructive for questions like this. Basically there are a lot of finance bros whose jobs depend on making big money up to the last nanosecond before the market crashes. They all know very well the crash is coming.

When you use AI that way, itโ€™s like youโ€™re asking the question by addressing it through your dog. โ€œHey Sparky, letโ€™s ask this lady about where to findโ€ฆโ€ It. Is. Rude!

New etiquette rule: if you email someone a question, please actually state the question. Please do not make them read a 5 pages of copy-and-pasted transcript of your convo with a slop bot to find out what you want. Itโ€™s rude, and it wastes everyoneโ€™s time.

One of my favorite medieval dudes is a guy named Sir Hugh Eland, a knight who started his career by pillaging his neighbors and ended it as a noble advocate for prison reform (from behind the bars of Nottingham jail).

Medieval story time!

Closeup of half a dozen red maple leaves, suspended mid-air by (near-invisible) spider web threads in a vertical line such that it looks almost like a composite image of a leaf tumbling down from the tree, twirling as it falls. Dark greenery blurry in the background.

Photos from today's walk at the Seattle Japanese Garden (thread). I was quite taken with these red leaves, dangling by a bit of spiderweb in a way that made them look like they were falling.

Saint Gall was a powerful monastery. It looks to me like the king wanted to make a donation, but had to do it in a way that demonstrated which way the power relationship ran. The child almost caused a diplomatic incident, but the king smoothed it over with a joke.
