Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning.

Two things can be true: we’re a competitive authoritarian state with all sorts of efforts to put a thumb on the scale of who has power AND we have sufficiently free and sufficiently fair elections that every month we see the party in power lose.

moreover people outside the base of regime supporters would ideally be kept indifferent rather than join the side of hostiles. but that's not what we are seeing in Minnesota

the more you expand the acceptable targets of cruelty the more you risk alienating parts of the regime aligned coalition (e.g. veterans, Latinos for Trump, etc)

doesn't seem like an error to me. 1) the character assassination of murder victims suggests that the state does in fact mind being viewed as cruel 2) the fact that some parts of the population desires cruelty to other parts doesn't mean the optics aren't a problem

Being nonviolent in an authoritarian regime doesn’t protect you. They don’t wait for provocation to respond with violence. But nonviolence *is* the tool we have. Despite the speed run towards authoritarianism, the regime is not consolidated. It’s still fundamentally weak.

The visuals of protesters being knocked down with fire hoses, beaten by police, etc., were a major factor. It put the violence of segregation into a form that was visible to normie white America and they didn’t like it.

Public opinion on segregation and the civil rights movement did not change because Martin Luther King was asking nicely.

Its real power is setting up the *contrast* between the peaceful behavior and the reasonable demands of the protesters and the excessive violence of the government response.
