13.09.2025 16:14 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I guess we never fully understand RUS economy, but a major cut to its oil revenue would be very painful at a time when things are bad anyway. On politics, I think DE and its obsession with China exports is key here: have they reached a point to admit the old Chinese market is never coming back?
13.09.2025 15:57 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I dont think our internal set up is Trump's problem.
But even if, Trump is calling for "tariffs", not specifically "sanctions." Tariffs - even punitive - don't require the sanctions route. It's a Council competence through qualified majority vote. EU did this already with Russian agriculture.
I can see why Trump is conditioning US sanctions on EU taking hard decisions. We have indeed been hypocritical, requiring others to do what we ourselves cant agree on. That is simply not acceptable. While Trump is doing this for other reasons, he is 100% right asking us for a clear decision.
3/3
We have been trying to achieve too many things simultaneously. Help Ukraine. Limit RUS revenues. Stop others from helping RUS, but keep buying what we need. Sanction circumvention, but maintain good relationships with China, UAE, Turkey, India. It can't all be done. We need to decide what's #1.
2/3
Ian - maybe, but that's not Trump's problem. If EU cant sort out its own mess with HU, SK and Russian energy, it shouldn't be asking US to resolve the issue for us.
Trump is right - even if for the wrong reasons- to require EU to make a clear decision abt what's important for us. 1/3
It's not a "get-out". It's a smart move, asking EU to put money where its mouth is and make key decisions abt its future. You cant be "kind of" against RUS energy exports. If limiting RUS revenues is key EU existential objective, then EU must go along US plan, otherwise it must stop pretending.

It's interesting how Macron's shocking move last year to unexpectedly call for earlier elections is still judged to have "backfired spectacularly". His point was to prevent NR from getting power, which he did, so what's the measure of success? 🤔

Another "I told you so" moment for Macron. Lets remember: the UK and US edged out France over this submarine contract.
If US backs out, the French stand vindicated and UK and Australian deeply embarrassed and betrayed.

Possibility of EU- #China detente is a top topic in EU.
Today, I discussed this with TVP World host Anna Kalczynska.
- are EU-China #EVs and rare earth talks a sign of a thaw?
- will China "divide & conquer" EU ?
- will Trump blink in talks with China?

For weeks I've been arguing EU must quickly strike a deal with US on trade, as our main preoccupation is not trade but security, and we must avoid a perfect storm of negotiating Russia peace, defence & NATO & trade at the same time.
Well, here it comes.🤷♂️

Reportedly, this is Belaya airfield, Irkutsk region of Russia.
In terms of cost-efficiency ratio, #Ukraine's operation on June 1, 2025, is unprecedented. A single FPV drone can cost as little as $300 to $600. Russia's modernized Tu-95MS strategic bomber is valued at more than $100 million.

Main points from my discussion at @tvpworld.bsky.social on Trump's plans to lift US Nord Stream 2 #sanctions:
- Trump's desperation for deal with Russia runs against most US objectives;
- RUS gas in Europe runs v. US econ goals;
- move unlikely to affect EU energy situation.

I've said this before, but I believe Zelensky (properly) is doing what he can to stall and prevent any deal the US may want to strike with Putin.
Trump doesn't have much time, and Zelensky knows that only Trump wants this deal.
This is how you build a totalitarian state.

Apart from the question of whether retaliation against digital services is good strategy, there is a question of whether such retaliation is even feasible. Bertin Martens dives into this.
