A Murder of Quality by John le Carre

A Murder of Quality by John le Carre

Just finished le Carre's A Murder of Quality. It's the 2nd Smiley story and, if A Call for the Dead was a trial run of a Smiley spy story, then this feels like a test of where else the character could go.
It's more of a straight murder mystery wrapped in the trappings of class.
Well worth a read.

Predator: Badlands.
A lot of fun (reminded me of some of the old Dark Horse comics) and, of course, a great Valentine's Day movie.

A black pen (in a crosshatch technique) and black ink (applied with a roller) illustration on off white paper of a man out walking in the countryside with his dog.

Muddy tracks in fields lead towards a leafless tree in a hillside, the man and his dog pal in silhouette against a cloudy white sky. The branches of the tree hang over the landscape against a gloomy grey backdrop, crows in flight making their way home to roost.

A cold and wintry scene, it makes you want to be indoors with a nice cup of tea.

No more feeling anxious about whether the originals of my Woman in Black illustrations are too expensive, I’ve been in such a worrisome mood recently.

I think they’re pretty good value.

This is an unpublished illustration I made.

We finished Small Prophets last night &, obviously, I don't want to spoil anything, but what a brilliant TV show.
It lives on a ley line crossing from the warm hilarity of Detectorists to the strange folk charm of a certain scarecrow.
A magical, funny, sometimes heartbreaking 6 episode adventure.

I've reached a point I've not known in a very long time.
When I put away the new story I'm working on & head off to work, I'm actually missing it. It's been a long old while since writing has felt this fun.
I really hope this is a good sign.

We cracked & watched 3 yesterday. Then 2 tonight.
It's taking no uncertain amount of will power (& threatening to hide the remote) to save the last one until tomorrow.
Such a fantastic piece of TV.

Heartburn by Nora Ephron

Heartburn by Nora Ephron

I spent the week reading Nora Ephron's Heartburn. It's an absolutely brilliant read. The style is so naturally conversational. The humour is swift, cutting & honed. But there's a raw, honest tone at the heart of the story that keeps it all honest.
