Lesson 14 - Hire slow, fire fast

Once successful, it’s tempting to hire a huge team…but it’s worth thinking about sustainability should things change. We’ve outlasted many studios by being cautious with hiring.

Even harder is knowing when to part ways instead of trying to fix issues that might not be fixable.

Lesson 10 - It's not a competition

Capitalism tells us we’re in a zero-sum game competing against each other. In many cases though, a rising tide lifts all boats.

We work with dozens of other studios to collaborate on projects none of us could take on our own. Mutual success means we can all win.

Lesson 6 - Kill your darlings

We’ve built and shipped a lot over the years, and it’s difficult to sunset something that’s reached its natural endpoint.

Attention and energy are finite resources, and if something isn’t growing or sustaining a part of your business, your time might be better spent elsewhere.

Lesson 3 - It's okay to say no

Early in the life of your company, you’ll be tempted to say yes to everything, since availability is important. But a valuable skill is knowing when to say no to things that don’t make sense or feel right.

Thorough vetting processes are cheaper than lawyers.

Sooo, it’s official? Well, in the legal sense at least. The new Lickability logo is now fully recognized as a registered service mark! ®️

iOS 26 Beta 3, huh? We’ll give Apple credit for focusing on UX legibility over pure aesthetics in this update, like switching to a higher contrast background in low-contrast settings… but it still doesn’t feel fully cooked.

"When thinking about WWDC this year, and our favorite features Apple announced, mine hands down is them letting us tap into their on-device foundation model. They've packaged it in an approachable way: Even if you've never worked with large language model APIs before, Apple's foundation model allows you to spin up a model session, give it instructions, and respond to user prompts with almost no friction. That's major. I'll admit, while it isn't the most powerful model when compared to some equal and bigger players, having this kind of functionality available on-device, built into the platform, really opened my mind to ways I could start incorporating foundation models into apps I'm building!"
