Exclusive: Trump administration targets college prep program Republicans defended, sources say President Donald Trump's administration fired almost all 60 staff at a college-preparation program for low-income students in a wave of shutdown layoffs, two people familiar with the cuts told Reuters, targeting a service Republican lawmakers defended earlier this year.

Trump's administration fired almost all 60 staff at a college-prep program for low-income students, including the TRiO programs that serve 900,000 students in programs like Upward Bound + Talent Search. These employees are part of the 4200 shutdown layoffs.

Goooood morning, #AcademicSky! What’s on the docket for us all today?

I have five reflections to write before I can tackle either my doctoral program academic writing sample or my Current Issues midterm.

If someone needs accommodations or adaptations, then they are disabled. Being disabled is a protected legal status. “Differently-abled” can often be used to strip legal protections away from us, by suggesting it is OUR duty to accommodate ourselves.

The United States is currently in material breach of over five hundred legally binding treaties with Indigenous nations. We violated even the treaties we coerced at the point of a sword.

We cannot talk about restoring the rule of law until we acknowledge and repair this fundamental truth.

I highly recommend the “sequel” (different author, but picks up from BMHAWK events) called THE HEARTBEAT AT WOUNDED KNEE (David Truer, Riverhead Books, 2019).

Our history did not end with that massacre, and we are still fighting against colonialism in all its forms.

Hey, Alaska's been hit by a typhoon and no one is talking about it. Indigenous towns are in need of aid. People are missing and the gov't is still shut down.

If any creators here are in affected areas, please drop links for aid.

#LawSky — tell me if my lawyer friend + I are missing a key piece vis-a-vis the trust relationship of the U.S. + Native American tribal nations besides:

• Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1831),
• U.S. v. Navajo Nation (2003), or
• Seminole Nation v. U.S. (1942)?

Spent a good portion of today trying to define the settlor/trustee/beneficiary relationship(s) between the U.S. and the tribal nations with one of my lawyer friends.

It looks like it has never actually been defined, although Justice Powell says the U.S. is not a settlor in U.S. v. Mitchell (1983).

The College Board has run a massive campaign to disparage “grade inflation,” and it has won.

While GPAs have increased in parallel for PoC, SAT scores typically favor rich, white/Asian, men over black/Latino, low-income, first-gen women (Hur. & Lee, “Grade Inflation…,” 2018, Figs. 3.9 & 3.10).

The racist edict that allowed Columbus to colonize and slaughter Indigenous people is still the law in the U.S. today. What holiday we celebrate on the second Monday in October matters because it reflects the beliefs we hold about who we are and where we come from as a country.

After years of advocacy and growing awareness of Columbus’s human rights abuses, some states and cities switched to celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day. Now, we are witnessing the backlash to that modicum of change. Full post on my substack now:

“Columbus Day” only became federally recognized in the early twentieth century to fix relations between the U.S. + Italy after lynch mobs killed Italian-Americans.

As a Cherokee-Italian American, I’m so tired of this argumentum ad antiquitatem. Celebrate Enrico Fermi instead. Hell, Sinatra.
