New art fair hack unlocked: If you see someone hawking plastic Indigenous trash, ask them what nation or tribe they’re from. When they can’t answer you (and they can’t), express sincere disappointment. Works every time.

Our country was shocked when migrant children were held in detention or separated from their parents. In the late 1800s/early 1900s, over a third of Native kids were sent to govt-run assimilation schools, where many died...

Do you know what regalia is? | Articles | CBC Kids Regalia is what an Indigenous dancer wears during traditional dances — like at a powwow. It is colourful and is different depending on the type of dance.

Just to let you know, that outfit is called regalia. Most regalia has familial and personal symbols woven into it. If you ever get the chance to go to a pow wow, remember to ask permission to take pictures of folks in their regalia! :)

Sorry for the kids’ link, but here are some great examples:

If someone needs accommodations or adaptations, then they are disabled. Being disabled is a protected legal status. “Differently-abled” can often be used to strip legal protections away from us, by suggesting it is OUR duty to accommodate ourselves.

The United States is currently in material breach of over five hundred legally binding treaties with Indigenous nations. We violated even the treaties we coerced at the point of a sword.

We cannot talk about restoring the rule of law until we acknowledge and repair this fundamental truth.

I highly recommend the “sequel” (different author, but picks up from BMHAWK events) called THE HEARTBEAT AT WOUNDED KNEE (David Truer, Riverhead Books, 2019).

Our history did not end with that massacre, and we are still fighting against colonialism in all its forms.

The racist edict that allowed Columbus to colonize and slaughter Indigenous people is still the law in the U.S. today. What holiday we celebrate on the second Monday in October matters because it reflects the beliefs we hold about who we are and where we come from as a country.

After years of advocacy and growing awareness of Columbus’s human rights abuses, some states and cities switched to celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day. Now, we are witnessing the backlash to that modicum of change. Full post on my substack now:

Alaska Vowed to Resolve Murders of Indigenous People. Now It Refuses to Provide Their Names. When the nonprofit Data for Indigenous Justice filed public records requests with the Alaska Department of Public Safety concerning cases it had investigated, the state rejected them.

Alaska vowed to resolve the murders of Indigenous people.

But when one nonprofit asked state law enforcement officials for a fundamental piece of data — a list of Indigenous murders they’d investigated — the state said no.

"Unprecedented." "This isn't us."

Please read a book. Try Joanne Barker's 2021 "Red Scare: the State's Indigenous Terrorist," to start. On pages 28-29:

"In 1703..the Massachusetts Bay Colony offered.. between 250 and 300 pounds for Indian scalps." (1/4)

The naturalist Jane Goodall died today at 91. Hope, she argued, is not merely “passive wishful thinking” but a “crucial survival trait.” Revisit a conversation with Goodall, from 2021: nyer.cm/F55JtsS

I mean, it really is just Disney’s Pocahontas in space. And there is SO MUCH wrong with Disney’s Pocahontas: the oversexualization, the avoidance of the deeper effects of colonization, the whitewashing.

It could have come with teeth, but telling those kinds of stories is HARD.

Congrats to Sacramento State’s brand new Wileety Native American College & best of luck to its inaugural cohort of 34.

I love that Wileety is named after a Mohawk word meaning “to bloom, to shine, to be bright.”
