Simply from a balance perspective I can't see a world where free 3 mana acceleration for any card is fair, let alone for a commander. I understand it's fun to play your commander and being able to play it early gets you to the fun sooner, but that's not worth removing mana cost as a balancing tool.

I think it just comes down to the formatting of the hybrid mana itself. I don't see just a red mana symbol, I see a mana symbol that's half red and half white. To me that implies "OR". I understand how that's different than the color of the card itself but that's how I first perceived it.

Yeah, that's fair! I do get it now, but I think for newer players like myself, WotC's argument about it being "OR" not "AND" like it is in other formats is a compelling one. I think I've seen enough arguments against it I'm fine with it not changing, but I see WotC's point it can be unintuitive.

I'm a newer player and was confused to learn the rule works the way it does currently. I would bet if you broke the answers down by "time spent playing the game" there would be a pretty clear divide between "new" players and "established" players.

Oh yeah I’m in total agreement there. They made this bed. I think some people just get locked into the present without considering the root cause of everything.

I think most of it comes from a place of looking at everything else going on with the current admin and asking “why isn’t there more coverage there.” But I think it largely doesn’t matter because there are literal watergate level scandals every day that do get covered and no one cares lol.
