I’ve been recapping Amiga 1200s this week. Some with the TNMOC team and now I’ve turned my attention to my own machine. A few bits to watch out for and the microscope is essential in spotting the very slight track rot which can’t be seen with a magnifier. I used hot air to get the old caps off.

An interesting day of talks today from Acorn and ARM former employees to mark the 40th anniversary of the first ARM chip being powered up. At The CFCH in Cambridge.

They recorded it, hopefully the talks will be on YouTube soon.

I was at the Centre for Computing History earlier today, and can report several bottles were opened at 3PM!

Popped into @rhayadercomputer.bsky.social earlier this week. Had a nice chat with the proprietor about retro computers. I was hoping to pick up a mug, but I need to get that online as they are printed to order.

A well loved film from my childhood. Got it on BluRay. Grade thought he’d create a great new film franchise like Bond. But it was a bit muddled and the lead was a miserable sod. Dirk Pitt is very laid back in the books. Alec Guinness turns in a fine performance.

Looking forward to seeing the videos.

The new line output transformer has been installed in this very clean (low mileage?) Philips CM8833mkii and now on soak test. Another one ready for the visitors to enjoy at the museum.

Another monitor for @tnmoc.bsky.social This is a nice example of a Philips CM8833 mkii from the early 90’s. I replaced the power switch but no picture and a high pitched noise. Suspect the LOPT has gone, and now guided by a video from Neil @visitthecave.bsky.social on its replacement. Thanks Neil!

We had a BBC Micro at home. Then we upgraded to a Spectrum +2! Love the Beeb though.

How the EDSAC computer changed science in the 1940s and 50s Volunteers at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, UK, have been constructing a working replica of an EDSAC machine, one of the world's earliest general-purpose computers.

We were thrilled to welcome New Scientist to #TNMOC to film EDSAC. As project lead Andrew Herbert put it, "We're kind of doing archaeology" - piecing together how this pioneering machine operated in pursuit of a working rebuild.

Amiga monitor now fully fixed. The power LED wasn’t working. It was both faulty and installed the wrong way around! Also located a front flap from a faulty monitor in the store. Ready to be paired with an Amiga 2000 at the museum #TNMOC

That is certainly a lovely example. I’ve got a Cubase dongle and ST lined up for some
MIDI tinkering. I’m just selecting a modern MIDI keyboard to work with it.

Lovely old Amiga CRT fixed. It was missing some parts, importantly the insulating piece between the psu switching transistor and the heatsink so it was shorted. On soak now. One for @tnmoc.bsky.social once I find a new front flap.

I'm currently working on an Amiga 1081 monitor for TNMoC. This one was found in a non-working state with some missing parts. I've replaced the BUT11A PSU power transistor, and a 4.7Ohm 7W resistor. The power transistor was missing its insulating material and clamp, so I had to fit an insulating kit.
