This is hardly news to any renter who lives in Istanbul, but the average rent in the city has gone up a whopping 606% since 2021 while the number of landlords opening legal cases to evict their tenants increased by 349% from 2020 to 2024.

Funny how ICE who is so allegedly fighting undocumented gang members has only managed to round up normal working class people, traumatize children, and fight US citizens in the streets.

Massive rally in Izmir showing coastline
Massive rally Izmir
Massive rally Izmir
A rally of over one million people in Izmir on May 19 - the day marks the start of Turkey’s War of Independence. It’s a public reclaiming of national identity in defiance of a regime that has spent years trying to narrow it. Memory marched louder than fear. #3E #TurkeyProtest

Trump, on the leader of Russia:
"Putin is tired of this whole thing and he’s not — he’s not looking good. And he wants to look good”
It's hard to imagine a more fundamental misunderstanding.
No, Putin is not "tired of the whole thing" - the war is the only thing keeping his economy going

Trump doesn't have “conflicts of interest” anymore.
A “conflict of interest” sounds like an unfortunate situation where Trump might choose his own interests over the nation’s.
But Trump isn’t conflicted about anything.
He's the most corrupt president in American history.

Per Amberin's sources, the offer from the government is 50,000 political prisoners released, including Demirtaş, improved living conditions for Öcalan, and de facto acceptance for the autonomy of Syria's Kurdish regions. Potentially huge win for PKK and DEM, but what about ordinary Turkish Kurds?

Pope Leo XIV's Creole heritage highlights complex history of racism and the church in America
The election of Pope Leo XIV, who is the first U.S. pope and has Creole roots, is raising more awareness about the complexity of the Creole identity.
“The pope’s grandparents migrated to Chicago around 1910, like many other African American families leaving the racial oppression of the Deep South, and ‘passed for white.’”
Pope Leo’s Louisiana Creole heritage sheds light on African American Catholic history:

Many of YOU, Democrats and Republicans, have friends and loved ones who died of cancer.
Cutting cancer research is evil AF, and we should ALL agree on that. If we can't, we're cooked.

I've encountered a few people arguing that tariffs are good, actually, because they will force us to consume less and while I think our consumer culture is problematic in many ways, I don't think things such as 'food' and 'medical supplies' fall under the category of unnecessary purchases.
