I’d heard that β€œgoing to the mall” was making a mini comeback! Glad to have confirmation!

Ummmm the mall? Did you take a trip to like, Milwaukee, or are you transmitting from 1999?

HMS Duke of York during scrapping at Faslane in 1958. Two barrels of its quadruple turret have been sliced off and lie at daft angles on the deck. For some reason I'm reminded of the old joke name for Viagra's active ingredient - Mycoxafloppin.

Jesse Jackson, civil rights icon, dies aged 84 A fixture in Democratic politics who ran for 1988 presidential nomination, Jackson was once close to Martin Luther King Jr The Rev Jesse Jackson, the civil rights campaigner who was prominent for more than 50 years and who ran strongly for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988, has died. He was 84. β€œOur father was a servant leader β€” not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement. β€œWe shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.” Continue reading...

The other day I heard Bluesky described as a "discourse diaspora community" and I haven't been able to shake it as the skeleton key to the form and shape of conversations here. Everyone is sitting at the emigre cafe reading reports of the same dispatches from Old Twitter, idly dreaming of the fall.

Extra story on top of this. One of you, I shall not say who without permission, once gave me such good feedback about something I was struggling with, I literally almost wrote a paper about it. I didn’t, but it came up in about a 100 convos and it was the most helpful thing I had heard at the time

One of my favourite Duvall performances is The Rain People. He's not in it much, & the guy could be a monster - he is, but you see the wounds that make him that way.

Duvall was a heavy-duty theatre actor (he did a lot of Tennessee Williams, including Stanley; Miller, Shaw, Mamet, etc). In Hollywood he took jobs like anyone else but he seemed to always look for (or create) work where he could apply that level of intelligence, daring, & fun.
