How the One-Take Approach of "Adolescence" Traps Us in Tragedy | Features | Roger Ebert The unbroken shots of Netflix's hit crime drama are more than just for show: They hit at the emotional immediacy of grief and despair.

ADOLESCENCE "allows us to see that grand tragedy play out over four agonizing slices of real time, opening up new dimensions to grief and anger and consternation that traditional filmmaking would far too easily protect us from."

I’m impressed with many of the hidden cuts, but I’m feeling like it’s not working for every scene. There are times when I feel the presence of the camera in ways I don’t like

Editing has always appealed to me because I feel like I’m making sense out of chaos. It’s my own way of finding control in this world. I’m working to define context and viewpoint, and I get the most amazing building blocks in the world: other people’s art.

That feeling when you’re fighting your editing software and finally say β€œthere has to be an easier way to do this,” and then you learn something great, but you feel like a dummy for not looking it up sooner

In rewatching Portrait of a Lady on Fire I’m struck by the distinct absence of music throughout the film, and yet, I don’t miss it.

It showcases some editing advice I received early in my career - Your cuts should always work without music. The music should only be there to enhance, not rescue

Honestly, couldn’t agree more. Part of me says, β€œwe need the work. Let the terrible sequels happen” but working on bad films wears you down, and it floods the market with unwatchable rehashes

In reading a lot of books by film and tv editors, I’m finding that describing the art and craft of editing is extremely difficult. It’s sculpture, it’s mining, it’s that scene in The Matrix when Neo can finally see it all. How would you describe it?
