Isn’t shingles a twofer, though? I just reached the *ahem* minimum recommended age for the shingles vaccine, and was told that I could schedule the first round any time I wanted, but the second one (I forget whether 2-4 weeks later) I definitely wanted to plan for 24-48 hours of recuperation.

Did they? That makes it more unconscionable, not less.

It’s like tea: quality of the resulting product depends both on the quality of the original ingredients and the brewing process.

(Tried to. Just typed too fast. They basically said at trainings: “You are not doing this for the wild animals to have gratitude towards you. That gratitude could get weaponized later by hunters. It should be good enough to know you have done a good thing.”)

Well, the rescue I worked for did it for all wildlife, at all stages. It didn’t always necessarily mean the same disguise. E.g. you could help feed Eagles by being disguised as a bear while putting the food down. Or viceversa. The idea is to not make the connection of human = helper.

It already happens plenty in the South, btw. It is done more subtly, sure, but I knew plenty of fellow teachers who went through similar conundrums.

When that First Amendment butted against harm to a community, there was still the option to shun the individual into leaving. Rightly or wrongly, this was the process here.

Unfortunately the natural consequences of speaking thoughtlessly are that some people are not going to want you around.

The right to free speech was never a carte blanche for freedom from anyconsequences. When it was enshrined by the Bill of Rights, it was meant to absolutely give one the right to express their beliefs via speech, and to not be incarcerated by a government. Nothing more or less.

(Part of the rationale is that as rescuers, you don’t want wildlife to get used to humans and start thinking all humans are nice. That gets them killed if they approach the wrong human. 😔).

That’s why some rescues actually care for birds/other wildlife in disguises. I learned this when I was trying to volunteer for a wildlife rescue (trying, in the sense that I went through the training for it, only to find out I was pregnant during it, and that kinda barred me from continuing).

My complaint? Kid 2 totally got shafted by the flip flopping of the district. To date, his school has not provided highly capable individualization, and cut STEM education to boot. Fun times.
