I wouldn't say I necessarily recommend rolling your own tooling.

You'll spend ~60% of your dev time on it, *every* feature means more complexity to your game and the tooling, and - for some people looking to get hired - it won't help get a job

So instead of hacking it in, I threw out all the dialog tooling and code, and made a branching dialog editor, preprocessor, and dialog box
