"A lot of you are probably wondering what the new strategic initiative is. Well, it’s complicated and hard to explain. It moves in mysterious ways. We’re building this plane as we fly it, as they say in the new strategic initiative biz."
Nature would do well to publish more content like this thoughtful piece from @kevinbaker.bsky.social and fewer Buzzfeed listicles gussied up as career advice "Five productivity hacks for using AI in your scientific workflow"
Chris Rufo is a cheap thug. The fact that there are cheaper thugs out there doesn't change the fact.

I'm honestly floored and moved to see this announcement of a call to service.
I have seen the integrity of @kolyin.bsky.social in his legal reporting and advocacy against grifters and conspiracy theorists. He would be a great public servant.

Thanks for all your service to NSF and Evolutionary Biology, Maureen!
New piece on why it’s unhelpful to characterise COVID debate as ‘lockdowns are bad’ vs ‘lockdowns are good’ when it was really about people who claimed that COVID was 100x less fatal than it was + optimal to have a massive epidemic immediately before vaccine… vs those who sense checked these claims.
Congratulations to @ku-eeb.bsky.social graduate student Austin Nguyen for receiving the @sse-evolution.bsky.social R.C. Lewontin Award!!
It appears (from that article) that they are stopping the creation of new appointments for visa interviews. Still terrible. I'm just pointing this detail out for the sake of people who already have an interview scheduled.

“The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas — hardly a partisan institution — finds that nondefense government R&D yields long-run economic returns of 150% to 300% …“Our findings therefore point to a misallocation of public capital, and substantial underinvestment in nondefense R&D.”
Good prompts for diversity statements made it clear that this was a space to discuss your previous efforts (and concrete plans) for increasing participation. I think that was helpful, because people were leery of putting very much of that their research statements.
The deadline for the @systbiol.bsky.social Early Career Travel Funds to attend the #Evolution2025 meetings is coming up! (Mar 31). Get your application in soon!!

My op-ed about my senator, but it could be about so many senators.

If organs of state security and demagogues and mob leaders are acting in concert to crack down on dissent it is unequivocally fascist. I don’t mean this to be a polemic: it's the only appropriate term from political science and theory for this practice.

I’m going to talk about pages 11, 12, and 13 of this brief in depth, because that is the part where the Trump DOJ tries to defend the Trump Executive Order.
The lawyers here so deeply misrepresent some of the cited material that it should be cause for sanctions in any just world.
