Evan has contracted smallpox? This is horrible news!
22.12.2025 21:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How much interaction did the Romans have with Ancient India? The discovery of graves for pet monkeys on the Egyptian coast suggest that some Romans, including soldiers, likely kept exotic pets in their households.
18.12.2025 21:37 β π 18 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0that was a serious plug for that La Loma paper, too! www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
17.12.2025 22:32 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0yes, Sarah, donβt overlook the monkey buried with its own pet kitten! Of everything @gregwoolf.bsky.social, Mantha, and I have edited for #JRA so far this year, this one is up there with my favoritesβdonβt sleep on the human skull from La Loma on #FirstView either. The Chigi vase, perhaps made in Corinth, but the prized possession of an Etruscan aristocrat. And one of the clearest visual depictions of hoplite combat. I find it hard to think our owner didn't recognize this warfare style!
30.11.2025 02:28 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I mean Iβm inclined to agree, Michael, with your general point by that date except (a) I donβt think theyβre necessarily engaged in battle against each other in this painting and (b) Iβm personally pretty dubious of Etruscan hoplites in the Greek manner but you might also mention the Chigi vase!
30.11.2025 02:22 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0FWIW PS, see what I think here www.cambridge.org/core/books/m...
30.11.2025 02:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0FWIW, Briquel thinks this is the Samnite ambush at Bovianum
30.11.2025 02:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Andriuolo 114 is an odd scene, however, maybe not typical warfare. The soldiers may also simply be lying in ambush. And then the cows behind the mountain... and the naked guy... and the weird helmet on the right...

14.10.2025 11:55 β π 18 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Happy birthday, Carlos!
09.10.2025 17:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Always a pleasure, Carlos. By far the most exciting news from your visit is the launching of the Berkeley Global Antiquity Project: people, stay tuned!
04.10.2025 18:09 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I also think, if (probably when) I flee academia.edu, I am going to make my own website. So another limitation right now is choosing a website title that is (a) available and discoverable and (b) not obnoxious (e.g. ProfessorBernardRules29BCE.com)
21.09.2025 15:44 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I mean to do this, but can't bring myself fully to do it because non-anglophone communities (by which I specifically mean Italian archaeology) make heavy use of it to circulate some otherwise very obscure scholarship, and I don't see that changing.
21.09.2025 15:42 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Congratulations @darcytuttle.bsky.social on a superb study of a critical Roman monument!

11.09.2025 12:26 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1All for misanthropy. It seems the interaction you're describing is not the one I am!
04.09.2025 20:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You certainly see more of these than me (makes sense), or maybe I'm a naive pushover susceptible to flattery (also makes sense), but I don't really mind chatting for 10-20 minutes with some 25 year old who bothered to slog through an article or two of mine
