09.11.2025 15:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thanks Theo! Yeah thought maybe someone with more knowledge might have a different suggestion than the usual handbooks but can recommend those as a starting point and Beyond Thalassocracies if feeling extremely keen!

21.10.2025 10:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I know Eric's work of course! Student looking for something about a much earlier period, not the end of the Bronze Age
21.10.2025 10:58 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0#AncientBluesky πΊ people who know more about the Bronze Age Cyclades than me - what would you recommend for an interested first-year undergrad to read by way of an introduction? (To the archaeology in general and/or specifically to issues of identity and Minoan/Mycenaean contacts)

18.10.2025 10:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0But the one I'm currently using for the first time (McKeown) doesn't seem to believe in composing anything longer than a sentence. So all the reading exercises are "work out the answers to these comprehension questions despite not knowing any of the grammar or vocab yet"...
17.10.2025 16:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah based purely on ch.2 I doubt I will be using anything else from there...
17.10.2025 15:59 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I have ended up adapting this passage to use a few more words my students already know, and written an extension assignment to translate into Latin a happier alternative ending for queen Dido in which she is delighted to get rid of Aeneas and sails off to be a pirate. Had to get pirates in somehow π

17.10.2025 14:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Hah yes I *learned* from that book a long time ago! Scintilla cenam parat et cetera... Just managed to find an online version and if I change the gender of Argus the dog that works pretty well π
17.10.2025 14:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Call for help from Latin teachers: does anyone know a textbook w/ passages using only 1st decl. nouns and pres and/or impf verbs?? Otherwise I'm going to have to start writing silly stories featuring a cast of women, girls, daughters, farmers, poets & pirates...

Yeah, we don't have huge amounts to give (could never fund a project!) so small grants lets us at least help with v specific "I need to pay conference fees/image publication costs/childcare while I attend an event/etc" type needs (list definitely not exhaustive!)
17.10.2025 10:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0(You have to be a WCC member but if you aren't already you can still apply and we just take the membership fee out of the grant. Which for students/un- and under-employed researchers is only Β£5)
17.10.2025 10:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is *extremely* small, but people working in ancient history (broadly conceived, and not just classical) would be eligible for the Women's Classical Committee's small grants scheme (up to Β£150).

The part I resent the most is that I have to click to close the AI summary to see the CONTENTS PAGE. You know, the main thing you want from an ebook.
