Somehow a single flower from our Hydnophytum moseleyanum (epiphytic ant plant) was pollinated, so today we have a single tiny berry

itโ€™s so funny to me how fully 50% of people finding my studio website through ChatGPT end up on 404 pages.

It generates URL schemes which donโ€™t exist, it attributes competitorsโ€™ products to us. A joke

bromeliad tree frogs? and I guess also epiphytic bromeliads

besides acacia there are also some caudex plants (Myrmecodia, Hydnophytum) which have similar relationships with ants

Running Mythic Bastionland (@bastionland.bsky.social) for the first time this week. Hereโ€™s my attempt at turning the semi-random hex map we made into something more โ€˜opening page of fantasy novelโ€™

I think that would probably be accurate, I was (a little sarcastically) wondering if thereโ€™s a more specific term.
Suggestions: โ€˜merchandise entropyโ€™; โ€˜speciality decayโ€™

does Cory Doctorow have a word for when a company diversifies its inventory so much it no longer sells the thing it originally specialised in?

(my local stationery store sells Funko Pops but not brown envelopes)

Render of three low-poly cacti (a spiny barrel cactus with a flower, a squat blueish one, and some kind of opuntia with a fruit). The textures are clean with N64-style filtering.

Same cacti as before, but with much higher resolution (though still small) textures. Detail on the spines & flower of the barrel cactus is much more visible.

Wireframe of the same cacti. The opuntia is made from 4 discrete elements mushed into each other and the barrel cactus has flat planes extruded from it to form the spines.

Trying out some cacti, low poly / N64-style (by which I really just mean linear texture filtering). 64x64 & 256x256 versions

Maybe youโ€™ve heard: every font is free! Since fonts arenโ€™t subject to copyright, you can legally โ€˜pirateโ€™ them if you use a specific loophole!

...except thatโ€™s not really true. Iโ€™ve seen this claim repeated quite a lot recently, and itโ€™s missing some pretty important nuance.

I have absolutely no sense of urgency, like a truly profound inability to rush anything. boyfriend regularly lies to me about when events start to make sure Iโ€™m on time. BUT I know this and if somethingโ€™s genuinely time-sensitive then Iโ€™ll overcorrect and be super early

Iโ€™m 100% the opposite, canโ€™t work under pressure but can get a weekโ€™s worth of stuff done in a day if I donโ€™t need to

I fully agree tbh, I only risk it when thereโ€™s either a flexible deadline or Iโ€™m quite confident itโ€™ll work out (in this case it was both)

Successfully pulled off my favourite trick: spending a day working on tooling, seemingly falling way behind schedule, then using those tools to race through the work and deliver early

Tbf the invocation of Dwigginsโ€™ name in this bothers me less than the fact that itโ€™s transparently a cheaper, lumpier version of Ogg from Sharp Type

Iโ€™m aware of the history of MM/GX/etc, just disagreeing with the premise that โ€œa single master cannot serve as a typefaceโ€โ€‰โ€”โ€‰they might often be limited in practicality, but single-master/single-font typefaces are common (just as single-size designs existed in the metal type era)

25.05.2025 20:23 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

With metal type and early bitmap fonts, โ€˜one set of parameters = one fontโ€™ was a safe rule, but as soon as we switched to scalable vectors itโ€™s been possible to produce multiple parameter configs from a single font

25.05.2025 20:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This isnโ€™t an up-to-date definition, as far as Iโ€™m aware. The typeface is the thing you see; the font has always referred to the method of delivery (metal sorts, in a specific size and style; an OTF in one style with dynamic resizing; a variable font with optical size and other axes)

25.05.2025 20:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

the โ€œa font is a specific style of typefaceโ€ definition was actually kinda specific to *metal* type, in case anyone wants to let the people who get their info from chatgpt know
