We did this experiment at my former job. The highest paid employees (editors) ended up putting hours into editing and fact checking stories because the AI was wrong in unpredictable ways. Between coming up with the story idea, prompting, and editing they were the most expensive stories we did.

Even if it does collapse…so what? I can tell you, from occupied Minnesota - the center of the world, at least it feels that way these days - we can give each other a soft place to land. We take care of us.

None of us are free until all of us are free. That has to include basic needs even when the crisis ends. A safe home, nutritious food, healthcare. Mpls has been keeping folks fed, housed, and healthy through ingenious and nimble mutual aid networks. We all deserve a society where all can thrive.

I have a buddy who does picks up marketing work and writes promotional copy. He quoted $2k for a bunch of writing, but the company had AI do it instead.

Three weeks later he negotiated $2.5k to edit the AI's work. Starting from a bad place is more work than just doing it.

They're building concentration camps with my tax money Chuck. They're torturing children. They're murdering innocent people on the street. What are you doing.

This is starting to get like universal basic income where every single objective study shows the same result but the people who don't like that result go "uh, well there's just really no way to know"

Highlighted text reads: "A new study published today found that A.I. chatbots were no better than Google at guiding users towards correct or helpful health advice. The technology sometimes presented false information or dramatically changed its advice depending on slight changes in the wording of the question. But A.I. has already proved quite good at other tasks, like at reading scans and images - better than many doctor, in fact."

This is a framing error, NYT. It's different technologies. Chatbots are not the same as the machine learning involved in reading scans (better defined inputs, clearer evaluation of outputs). Calling both AI is like conflating bombs dropped from planes with cars, because they both involve explosions.

🤖🚮 There are some things a machine can’t replace.

A new study from Anthropic finds that gains in coding efficiency when relying on AI assistance did did not meet statistical significance; AI use noticeably degraded programmers’ understanding of what they were doing. Incredible.

No one told me this until Wednesday, so I'm telling everyone. Remember how you powered through finals week or whatever and then promptly got sick? A similar thing may happen when you try to take a break after prolonged exposure to disturbing material, e.g. the US news.
