"Norway should seize this historic opportunity by using the Oil Fund to buy Harvard, construct a state-of-the-art facility near Oslo, and relocate much of its faculty and students to Norway."

In 2016, I figured it would probably take 20 years for Britain to rejoin. I still feel like that timeline is somewhat plausible.

31.07.2025 11:38 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0My recommendation is organizing progressives in order to build big tent coalitions, creating positive alternatives. I think shame as a political tool has proven largely counter productive, usually benefiting the right. Focus should be on political reforms (which should include wealth redistribution)

29.07.2025 10:31 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 7 📌 0Maybe. In which case we need a term for the practice. Today it is rewarded, by the algorithm, but weirdly also by many progressives. It should be the discouraged, since it's a practice counterproductive to change, only benefiting the ego of the performer who gets clout.

We need a term for people who use performative outrage to gain clout on social media. It's an absolutely toxic thing for our discourse, but due to the algorithms its still widely exercised by pundits of all political stripes.

I think most policy wonks grossly overestimate how much the average person pays attention to politics, and in particular international politics.

22.07.2025 20:14 — 👍 424 🔁 112 💬 7 📌 2I suspect that Higgins is right that the market logic that increasingly permeates every aspect of our lives contributes to the democratic decay we are seeing. But I think it may be incorrect to view it as imposed from above by a political class, rather, it may have been what voters wanted.
23.07.2025 08:09 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I think many of the reforms towards a more neoliberal/managerial state has been driven by the goal of increased growth, which voters consistently have shown is something they value highly.
23.07.2025 08:06 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I usually agree with Higgins, but I'm not convinced he's right in this case. Was the historical period before neoliberalism really more democratic? And what if the increased managerial logic is a response to pressure from the electorate?
23.07.2025 08:03 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 1Cautiously positive towards this. The starting point for any democrat should be that suffrage should be as universal as possible. It's on the people who want to limit suffrage to provide solid evidence as to why it is warranted.
