A chocolate cake with red and white decorations and lit candles shaped as the number 75. Bold text reads: βThe NSF Turns 75 Today. What has it done over the past 7 decades?β The background is a celebratory red with a spray-paint texture.
HAPPY 75th, NSF!
Weβre celebrating this milestone by highlighting some of NSFβs most transformative accomplishmentsβinnovations that have shaped our world and continue to drive progress in health, technology, the environment, and beyond.

Now they are gutting NSF. This is radical destruction.
The Trump goal is to end scientific research in America. Our sense is that few people, even inside the government, have actually grappled with this reality.

$25k grants for those who:
1. are working on research on STEM and education (including AI and CS, graduate education and MSIs, and scholarship that aims to reduce inequality), and
2. have had a recently terminated or cancelled grant from NSF.
Early-career scholars prioritized
I have reviewed many times for #NSF grants and I see the innovation, technical challenges, and important ideas put forth by early trainees and established investigators alike. Halting NSF funding (current and future) is short sighted and helps no one.
03.05.2025 14:55 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My 1st experience working in science was at UNAVCO, an #NSF funded geosciences org. now part of @earthscope.org. So much technical knowledge I use in my neuroscience (!) lab was from that early experience. My PhD was then funded by #NSFGRFP. Ending NSF funding will devastate careers and innovation.

It's not just Columbia, it's not just DEI, and it's not just biomedical research: Trump's war on universities has frozen crucial science at institutions like Princeton, Cornell, Northwestern, and more. Our @nature.com team spoke to some of the affected scientists: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

31.03.2025 22:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0hi, cis folks!
if we *are* going to talk ACA, RFK's HHS proposed a rule to remove *all trans care* from ACA essential health benefit status.
~25mil people are insured by ACA & if 1% are trans, that's 250,000 people who'd lose access to care.
that's bad! take 2 minutes to stand with trans people.π§΅
What this administration is teaching Universities is that even if you comply - punish students for protests, ban masks, remove DEI from websites and classes - they will still defund you and try to break you apart. Basically, there is no point in complying.

But one wrinkle is the role of the Heschlβs gyrus. It clearly has a role in responding to speech+sound, but stimulation and ablation studies show that it can be resected without changes to speech. How to reconcile these findings? I try to address this in the commentary, but would love more thoughts!

Haha! I love that you asked this because I do this all the time, and my husband makes fun of me for it. There is evidence for this related to attention and dual tasking! Basically, if your brain has limited resources to pay attention to incoming info, hearing could interfere w/vision and vice versa.
18.11.2024 14:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In the notched noise therapy you can take white noise, which is like a βshhβ sound across all sound frequencies, and then βnotchβ (make quieter) the frequencies around your tinnitus frequency. There are mixed findings as to how effective this is, but it is one treatment.
18.11.2024 13:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I am not researching tinnitus specifically, but from my colleagues in audiology I know that there are some tinnitus treatments similar to this, such as white noise or notched noise therapy to teach your brain to ignore the tinnitus frequency. So your own experience makes sense with that!
