the Platner discourse has frustrating echoes of the Newsom discourse, in that people seem to want us to just give up now and lock in without waiting to see if something better turns up. this isn't blackjack! we can keep asking the dealer to turn over more cards for like another YEAR

there’s a subset of people who, if you point out something bad happening now, will basically reply β€œit was always like this and anyone who disagrees is just privileged.” it parades as savvy but nine times out of ten it’s just an ahistorical oversimplification.

This is such a tedious misdirect. Yeah while we’re here let’s check everybody’s 1040 before they take the Staten Island ferry. If you make more than $200,000 a year that’ll be $3 please.

Ashlee and Erik Dahlberg of Lowell, Indiana, lost their 8-year-old son, Liam, to a vaccine-preventable disease in April.

β€œI thought having the vaccines would protect our children,” Erik Dahlberg said. β€œUnfortunately, it did not because other kids, other adults, need to be vaccinated as well in order for it to work.”

Liam was particularly vulnerable because he had severe asthma and allergies. He was vaccinated against Haemophilus influenzae type b, or Hib, but it caused his brain to swell and killed him less than two days after he complained of a headache. Hib is transmitted by respiratory droplets, often spread by coughs and sneezes. Doctors said Liam’s case likely stemmed from someone unvaccinated, Ashlee Dahlberg said.

With two other children, the Dahlbergs worry about living in one of the many U.S. communities with low immunization rates. State statistics show one in five kindergartners in their county don’t meet vaccination requirements.

There are, of course, ways to save money in this business. Many US clothing factories run on what's known as a "piece rate" system, where workers are paid per operation, not by the hour. This system allows factories to skirt minimum wage laws.

It's also how we get US sweatshops

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

β€” Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
β€” Against raising the minimum wage
β€” Buys foreign imports because they're cheap

The Socialist Case for Antitrust Markets need regulating. Always have, always will.

Tech CEOs loathe former FTC chair Lina Khan for breaking up their monopolies and protecting consumers. Antitrust could play an even larger role, with subsidized or state-owned stepping in to increase competition. From Ryan Cooper: trib.al/8OkqU1R

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Absolutely winning.

Measles is a natural symbiotic so-called pathogen that makes susceptibility to certain cancers greatly reduce.

Getting it while young as we used to gives you lifelong immunity that the vaccine cannot ever provide.

You people that think measles cases are bad have started out assuming measles is bad.

Lots of things kill weak people.

But the vaccines cause autism and all kinds of other neurological and immunological disorders along with all the other toxic and poisonous things were exposed to in the modern day.

Measles goes through most healthy people when they're young asymptomatically.

Anyone who doesn't know any of the above needs to update...

We looked back on the "backlash" against American Eagle ads featuring Sydney Sweeney and her "great jeans." Right-wing media declared that liberals were outraged and thought the ads were racist -- even the White House joined in.

If you thought that story reeked, you'll want to see what we found.

I know this isn't all just about health care BUT the health care is the most egregious shit. They're literally closing rural hospitals to give millionaires a beach house.

They're literally stealing health care from some of the poorest Americans to give the wealthiest 1% ANOTHER tax cut they don't need.

Yep. Ultimately it just feels like Klein and Coates have different goals.

Klein wants the left to win elections again.

Coates wants to stop America’s slide into authoritarianism.

These may sound the same, but they’re not.

I think with β€œthe line” those are kind of your choices: change your line to appease those in power, or recognize the solidarity with the oppressed and the marginalized, the ones that have been othered. And I think this is a struggle for some people, and I think it’s out of fear.

Opinion | Ta-Nehisi Coates on Bridging Gaps vs. Drawing Lines

This was revealing. Worth reading. The basic demand is that Coates spend less time thinking/writing his true feelings and more time playing political strategist. Klein asks him over and over him to do Dem strategy; he says no, over and over. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/28/o...
